Drawings in the Dirt - LotR
This is just a little fluffy story I wrote up a while back about young Eowyn and Eomer. It was my very first LotR story.
Drawings in the Dirt
Eowyn sat with folded arms upon a low rock as she pretended not to be interested in what her brother was drawing in the dirt. He had been using a pointed stick to create battles and hideous creatures all morning. Eowyn's face portrayed a young girl, thoroughly disgusted with her brother. However, this was not the case. She was intently interested but she didn't want the said brother to know. But he was too busy drawing to care.
"Eowyn! Look!" Eomer exclaimed as he pointed to his drawing in the dust.
"What's that?" Eowyn asked as she sprang up to inspected the figures.
"It's a war," Eomer replied as if it was the most obvious thing in the world. "See, here is Uncle on his horse as he prepares to charge against an evil army. And look! Here am I on my pony and Uncle let me use a real sword."
Eowyn frowned. "Uncle wouldn't let you fight."
"Yes, he would," Eomer insisted.
"Where am I?" Eowyn asked.
"Don't be silly, Eowyn!" laughed Eomer. "You wouldn't ride to war." Perhaps he said it out of ignorance or perhaps he said it because he knew he would rather leave her behind and know that she was safe.
"I would ride to war," Eowyn insisted. "Girls can go to war."
Eomer snorted. "No battles for you, Eowyn. You are going to stay right here where I know you are safe."
Eowyn crossed her arms and turned away. She marched several paces away, seized a stick lying in the dust and began to draw her own battle. She crudely formed an army of four large things with their tongues hanging out of their mouths. She smiled smugly. This was a scarier army than Eomer had drawn. Then she drew a great horse (not a pony, mind you) at the front of five horsemen of the Rohirrim. She seated herself upon the foremost horse. She drew her hair flying out behind her head as she charged, sword raised high, against her foes.
But as Eowyn inspected her drawing, she thought about how evil her creatures looked. What if one of them killed her horse and she tumbled to the ground? What if she was stepped on by one of the creatures? All the things that could happen to her in this battle, flashed through Eowyn's mind. Suddenly she realized, maybe Eomer was right. Maybe she should stay at the castle where she would be safe. Or maybe…
Eowyn smiled as she drew another horse alongside her own and seated a figure upon it, his sword raised high like her own.
"Eomer!"
He jumped to his feet and hurried over to his sister. He knelt down beside her as he quickly examined the figures.
"This is my battle," Eowyn explained. "And that is me leading them…with you."
And Eomer smiled when he saw that he was riding beside her.
"Maybe I will go to war," Eowyn decided. "But I will go with you, brother, because I know you will keep me safe."
"Always," Eomer promised. "I'll always protect you, Wynnie."
Eowyn took her stick and added one final touch. She smiled at her brother. Eomer gently squeezed her hand as he saw what she had added.
A heart.
