Swan's Napowrimo

Post by Swanwhite » Thu Apr 06, 2017 7:04 pm

1.
Dandelion laughter
in the aftermath of spring,
sprouting, growing, sending out
Our seeds on silver wings.
Living, dying
Multiplying,
Smiling in the sun,
There is no way to stop us
once the cycle has begun.

2.
________The Inukshuk
________snuck a
_________sticky snack
before turning back to solid stone
to stand alone on the open road
_______while the wind
______and snow wash away
______the ______remains
_____of the _____syrupy
_____stains _____on its face.

3.
It’s a Newsprint winter
when the words are obscured
by a shortage of ink.

The snowdrift sections will make you squint.
I can make my guess,
but at best
It’s a shred of a hint.

4.
Admiral Atlas
is able at last
to admit that
he’s tied to the mast.

“Here there be monsters!”
he calls to his crew
But there comes no reply
Not a sigh from the mist they went through.

Not one of them heeded
The course he decreed
From the port
Where the crowd called godspeed.

His charts were so artful,
his lines were so true,
but the albatross cried as it flew
that “a map is no use for a mutinous crew.”

5.
Quantity over quality right?
Like twenty messy essays till I get a passing grade?
I could write my thirty poems in a day
if I really had to.
Whatcha think?
A race for the brink?
Drain the bottle of ink in two blinks?
And if I dare to go over this thirty-leafed clover
Will anyone stop me or care?
Could I write thirty-seven?
Or another eleven?
Are there rules against that around here?

6.
The kettle is on,
and we’re settling down
for some tea for the three of us
-no make that four-
(there was a knock at the door.)
There’s a murmuring rumble,
a crescendo of toil,
as it slowly and steadily comes to a boil.
Biscuits and butter,
and fresh rhubarb jam,
for an orange pekoe epigram.
Plenty of milk
and two sugars for me
in the strength and the stillness
of afternoon tea.

7.
Tea is a leaf
And tea is a liquid
(Tee is a shirt
and a thing you play golf with)
Tea is a plant
And tea is a time
Tea is a splendour
And this tea is mine

8.
The box had a tiger on it,
And it was labelled bengal spice,
And I steeped it for a minute
At the storekeeper’s advice,

Then I stirred in milk and honey
While it still was giving steam,
And it tasted like the places
That I’ve never ever been.

9.
Lewis once said
you could never produce
a cup of tea larger than pleased him,
so sometimes I try
to imagine the size
of a teacup that might change his mind.
The size of a pool?
Or of all Istanbul?
That perhaps he’d be utterly fine with.

10.
The Edge of Ordinary
Fairytales are always
on the edge of ordinary,
on the dreary sort or days,
or in the normal sort of merry.

First it’s magic that you’re used to
like a sunset or a smile,
then it’s something more unusual
that makes you stare awhile.

Could be a tunnel in the garden,
or a dragon’s lonely cry,
could be goblins in the basement,
or a gryphon in the sky.

But whatever form it takes
you must be ready to advance
To leap into the wonder
of the mad and mirthful dance.

11.
Prairie Giant
There's a giant on the prairies.
You can see it ‘round for miles,
But you’ll need my cousin’s telescope
To catch its crooked smile.

They say it’s from the rockies
But no one really knows
Why it chose to walk way out here
Where it’s open and exposed.

Some folks are kinda scared of it,
Some folks are just annoyed,
Some are rather curious,
And that’s mostly me and Lloyd.

His uncle let us use his truck,
But we didn’t tell him why
‘Cause we’re off to get a closer look
And Lloyd’s aunt is sure we’ll die.

It gets bigger as we drive along
Now it’s filling up the sky,
And I’m not so sure Lloyd’s Aunt was wrong
When I see it up so high.

Now it’s walking slowly eastward,
Go’n’ take its own sweet time,
As he carefully methodically
Steps over hydro lines.

And I’m not sure if he knows we’re here,
Or whether I wish he could,
But I feel real quiet and funny,
And not at all like I thought I would.

12.
Paper Duels
Paper dolls duel, not with swords,
But with letter openers and staple guns,
For injustice that just can’t be ignored
Among flat flippant fellows too noble to run.

The seconds arrange for the terms and the time
And the proud paper gentry strut forth to their place
Ready to punish or pay for their crimes
While I stand meekly by with the tape just in case.

13.
Sky Harbour
“An airport is just another word
For a sky harbour,” she told me,
“And when we’re aboard, buckled, secured,
I’ll tell you the rest of the story.
Of the sky ships and their daring crews
Who go sailing through the clouds.”
And she held my hand so I could not lose
My way in the shifting crowds.
“And perhaps there are some pirates too,
Or dragons in the sky,
But all the way, it's me and you,
And it’s wonderful to fly."

14.

I will always remember that day on the trail
(A Friday) when first I met Abi the Gail.
She was dragging a dragon along by its tail.

It was autumn and she was as fierce as the leaves,
And within a short time we were thicker than thieves,
And I’m always in awe of the beauty she weaves.

Pleasure to see your work. :) I especially liked the bengal spice tea poem, The Edge of Ordinary, and Sky Harbour.

If somebody has an idea for a Narnia comic that they weren't planning on making themselves, I <------ This offer still
would be so grateful if they would send it to me in a PM. I am running appallingly low on ideas...! <-- stands. :)
