This is not at all what I was expecting to turn up with when I started writing it, but here:

Upon the southern fields in youth I strayed—
In seeking for adventure, sought far lands.
My mother warned me “no”; I disobeyed,
And by my folly found enslaving hands.
In time I would escape, but not alone:
To thwart suspicion I a rider found
Who ne’er could cross the border on his own,
So to each other’s fates we both were bound.
Two others came in time who freedom sought,
And joined our mad crusade to reach the north:
Two thralls long caged, a bride unwilling bought,
A son whose birth none knew, we sallied forth.
And in the end the slaves free beasts became,
The bride found love in truth, the son his name.

Aww, thank you! I don't write sonnets very often because the meter is a nightmare, but hey, it's good practice and the result sounds more sophisticated than a limerick or whatever.
