A Study in Turnips

A velvet darkness mixed with a sickly fog enveloped our street late in the night of the 28th of March and were it not for a lamp kept burning by Holmes, who was absorbed in his study of an unusual packet arrived that day, I do not believe we would have received the very young Mr Jervis Thornton to our flat.

With the clock about to strike one, I allowed myself to rise from my comfortable seat near the crackling of the fire and was eagerly willing to put aside my worries till the next day when there came a quick rap at our door.

"Confound it all!" I cried out. "Who would be calling on us at this hour of the night?"

"That would be Lestrade's new recruit." Holmes removed himself from his desk and walked towards the door and opened it.

"And how did you know that?" I asked in utter disbelief when I saw the young man in a new uniform.

"That is of no importance at the moment. Mr Thornton, may I introduce you to Dr Watson - you may say in front of him anything you will say to me. Watson, Mr Jervis Thornton. And now that that is over with." He swiftly motioned the two of us to sit. "Now, Mr Thornton, did you make sure you were not seen?"

"I did my best, sir. (It's deathly dark outside, so it's a good thing you kept your lamp going or I'd have passed right by.) But as you are likely to know, there are always a few men making their way home at this hour and avoiding them all would be a feat."

"Quite so. Well, you are here now and that is what matters." Holmes leaned back and examined him, only for a few seconds. "Your voice is calm, but your hands betray you to the basest of feelings - they tremble as if you've had a fright. Do tell us what happened."

"Mr Holmes, as you know there have been four cases of people gone missing this week. And now -" he pressed his hands together to keep them from shaking, "the commissioner of Scotland Yard, he's disappeared. Disappeared like all the others."
