Summer Reading Challenge 2019 (MN) - About

As our regular members know, every year during the northern summer, we put aside a week during which we read and discuss or post reflections on the assigned reading for each day.

This year the Summer Challenge will take place from Mon 15 - Tue 23 July 2019.

After a slight variation last year (in which we read selected passages on the character Eustace), this year we will go back to selecting a book to read. We'll be looking at The Magician's Nephew this year, what is chronologically the first book (though not the first published).

Anyone with an interest in Narnia is welcome to join in. We will be assigned roughly two chapters a day which participants can read in their own time (those with limited time are also welcome to listen to an audiobook or drama or other adaptation - though our intention is to focus on the book itself rather than other versions).

Each day, participants are encouraged to post a "reflection" on their reading in a dedicated thread on this forum. This can take any form from simple prose comments on things that struck you to something more artistic (e.g. poetry, graphics/art, fan-fiction, an essay etc.) Whatever inspires you - feel free to share it on the sharing thread.

More information to follow.

I’m planning to read the Afrikaans version of MN this year, just because I can (and saw it in a library a couple weeks ago).

I went to the library today to take out the copy. My own English copy of MN is actually currently missing (lost at my parents house somewhere) so I took out an English copy too, in case my reading is to slow and I run out of time (also so I can make comparisons). The lady at the library, realising I’m English-speaking, was really confused. “Are you sure you want the Afrikaans version? We do have it in English.” Then she realised I was also taking out the English of the same book. She must be really curious what Dr [Surname] wants with the two language versions of the same book :D

But you’re in linguistic studies, right? Or does she not know that?

I'm in! So is Perch. We've read up through "The Fight at the Lamppost." We'll go back tonight and start reflecting. If we can manage about a chapter a night we should end at roughly the same time as the group.

Yay! Perch may be breaking the record for the youngest participant. :D

@Ariel: My specialty is currently Ancient Greek rather than general linguistics, but the public librarian wouldn't know what I’m doctor in (only that it says so on my card). The last two books I took out were also children’s Doctor Who books. Maybe I’m doctor of 20th century children’s literature. If she knew I was a Geeek lecturer, she might suspect me of doing a Greek translation of MN :D
