Even Rishda Tarkaan, a very powerful man, will want to build himself a palace in Narnia."

"What I don't understand why would he want to build temples when he doesn't even believe in his own gods or any of the supernatural", said Tirian.

"And what about the tavern maid at Chippingford?", asked Eustace, "What has happened to her?"

"I do not know. Rishda could have kidnapped her as he intended to. She could have got away at one point.
This is... probably rather different from most of the stories posted here. It's a crossover with Star Wars Legends, sparking off an alternate universe - definitely for Star Wars, and more or less for Narnia as well. It occurred to me that I would like to see more Narnian reactions to it to keep me on track. Hence my posting it here. :-)

It started with a gift exchange prompt in 2020 - I happened to be paired with an online fanfiction friend as my recipient, and she asked for a lot of things I like as well. One of her "maybe" prompts was a crossover with Star Wars - and I happen to know she likes some specific Star Wars characters a lot, and they're among my favourites as well. The whole idea majorly got away from me. So I gave her a slightly different story for the exchange, and started writing this big thing, currently still unfinished.

Warning that Star Wars bring with them some heavy themes. On the other hand, I don't think anything this touches on is worse than some things touched upon in the Narnia books as well; after all, they deal with some pretty heavy themes as well. It only tends to be on a larger scale in Star Wars, because it deals with a whole galaxy instead of one world or two... Just - a warning that this isn't exactly a fluffy story. There is a lot of fluff in it nonetheless, and I fully intend to keep it light in places to balance things out, and of course, because it's a Narnian story, things do work out and there absolutely is a happy ending. :-)

Also, the main character isn't well known, so here's a rundown of his story prior to the events of this one:

Kir Kanos was one of the Royal Guards of Emperor Palpatine. He'd been trained in a gruelling program that drilled into him unquestioning loyalty and ruthlessness. In Star Wars Legends, Palpatine was briefly revived through the use of clones (something New Canon picked up but many years later than it happened in Legends) but ultimately he was defeated and died for good, partly through treachery of his own people. One of them was an ambitious, Force-sensitive Royal Guard (named Carnor Jax - he gets a brief mention in my story somewhere) who, with the help of the Sith Dark Lady Lumiya, hoped to become Emperor himself. Because the rest of the Royal Guards were still loyal to Palpatine and would never allow his rise to power, he had them killed. Kir Kanos was the only survivor and swore revenge on everyone responsible for Palpatine's death - including Luke Skywalker.
Along the way, though, Kanos met other people from the former Rebellion, and started working as a bounty hunter in the Outer Rim, under the name Kenix Kil: bringing criminals to justice, and meeting various regular people who needed help, et cetera. He began to realise things were not as simple as he had been led to believe. He got his revenge on some of the people he had sworn revenge on, and in the end, partially under the urging of one of his new Republic friends, he swore it off on the rest of them who were not really so bad.
In the last part of the story, he even decided to warn Luke and Leia of a danger to Coruscant and the New Republic that he became aware of, and started working with them to bring about final peace between the New Republic and the Imperial Remnant, where he had some friends. Due to machinations by the enemy of the day and other events, it did not quite work out, and he had to fake his death and disappear again.

Which is where this story picks up.

Well. After the prologue. :-) I'll post that and the first chapter now, and I would welcome your thoughts. :-)

PROLOGUE

Location: Narnia- Cair Paravel

I was known as Andrya, the daughter of royals. My parents, Swanwhite and Orion were the rulers of Narnia. Jadis had been in Narnia for 200 years, slowly growing stronger in the dark magic. The tree of protection was still thriving, with lots of dwarves tending to it daily. It was a time of relative peace. I was in line for the throne. The problem was, I didn't want to take on as much responsibility as I would have to. To be honest, I resented legal matters. I couldn't tell my parents, as they would tell me what they always told me; "Darling, you are the oldest of the family. You are in line for the throne."

The problem was, I didn't want to.

I couldn’t tell my friends, they would think it cowardly. Besides, I didn’t seem to have many of them these days.

Maybe I could ask Cyfrin for help.

*************

Location: Narnia- Gadleigh Fortress

Cyfrin did not come to Narnia often, as it was still a bittersweet place for him. Narnia was a beautiful land with more wondrous and talking animals than any other. Even in his own home of Telmar, the vast majority was human. For years he fought against Narnia, for years he was the reason so many warriors never returned home to see this land again. He wasn't ashamed of it, but wished it had never happened. Now, here he was, the most renowned survival trainer in all Narnia. Whatever loss he caused he had a chance to try and create a better reputation through his teachings, at least that was what he told himself.
Throwing his leather jerkin over a chair, he sighed, running his tanned fingers through his hair before exiting the room he had been given for studying and lodging. Between journeying across borders, under trees and over ravines he had barely stayed in civilization for more than a few weeks in over a year and a half. He was tired. He needed a drink and so in the corridors of that palace, he took out his water skin and looked out the windows across the stunning blue ocean.

Then Jill and Jewel were walking side by side. She had quite fallen in love with the unicorn. She thought he was the most gentle creature she ever met. He was so soft at speech that you hardly notice how fierce he could be in battle.

"How nice is this", said Jill, "I mean, just to be walking along like this. It's a shame that there is so much happening in Narnia."

"Well, you're quite mistaken", said Jewel, "You sons of Adam and daughters of Eve have always showed up from your strange land, only times when Narnia was stirred up and upset. But you must know it wasn't always like that. In between your visits, there were times of peace and valiant kings and beautiful queens. Oh, who can remember the names or count their numbers?"

"Oh, please, tell us about them."

"I remember that when I was a dragon", said Eustace, "Reepicheep the Mouse told me of how a dragon was terrorizing the Lone Islands. Perhaps, Jewel, you know that story?"

"Oh, King Gale and the dragon", said Jewel, "Why, yes. I know that story."

Then Jewel began the tale of King Gale and the Dragon, and it was all shown in a flashback.

***
The Lone Islands

The Lone Islands was a three Island nation on the Eastern Ocean. The names of the Islands were Felimath, Avra, and Doorn. Doorn was the most inhabited by humans of Narnia. The name of the city in Doorn was Narrowhaven. It was a vast city, with people going in and out. One day, there was a fierce wind coming from the North west. It was heading East, to the Islands. Jewel related to the tale as he sung in V.O-

Jewel (VO):
Far over the Lone Islands rise
Leave us standing upon the height
What was before we see once more
Is our kingdom a distant light

For great kings and beautiful queens
There was a gleam in the forest greens
On silver and gold necklaces they strung
The flowering stars, on crowns they hung

The trees were roaring on the heights
The wind was moaning in the dark of night
The fire was red, its flame spread
The trees were like torches, blazed with light

The bells were ringing in the Lone Islands dale
Men and women looked up with faces pale
The dragon's ire was more fierce than fire
Laid low their towers and houses frail

Far over the Lone Islands rise
Leave us standing upon the height
What was before we see once more
Is our kingdom a distant light

During the song, there was a flashback shown of what was happening. A dragon has come to the Lone Islands. It started to breath fire on the town of Narrowhaven at once.

"A dragon!", cried a man.

"Sound the alarm!", cried a boy.

Then the bell in the Town of Narrowhaven was sounded and some of them blew long horns to call for more soldiers. Many brave men tried to fight the dragon but to no avail. Towers and houses burned. There was even panic in the town.

***
Narnia

10 years earlier

For a time, Narnia was at peace. The kingdom was established by the lion Aslan Himself, who appointed a cabby named Frank and his wife Helen as the first king and queen of Narnia. They've had many children and great-grand children who followed as kings and queens. One of the later kings, Frank V, had two sons. One, named Col, became the first King of Archenland, establishing the Kingdom of Archenland. Sometime later, there were outlaws in Archenland who crossed the great desert, and settled in a new country called Calormen.

At Cair Paravel, a castle in Narnia, there lived a king, Olin. He was 8th in descent from Frank I and Helen. His wife was a beautiful queen named Nadina, and they had a son named Gale. He was to be the next king after his father. Each day, Olin gave Gale all sorts of advise on kingship once he has taken over.

Olin was holding a council meeting with Prince Gale, Zoggin the dwarf, Cloudwit the Centaur and other courtiers. They were discussing on the matter of a powerful sorceress, Jadis, who was growing stronger in dark magic in the North.

"As long as the Tree of Protection stands", said King Olin, "She will not come down to Narnia."

"But how long will that last, Father?", asked Gale, "I mean the Tree of Protection could perish any moment."

"When you are king, my son, it will be your duty to help flourish the Tree of Protection to keep Jadis out of Narnia."

There was so much to be done. Help flourish the Tree of Protection and how to deal with diplomatic relations with other countries. Gale had so much to learn about being king of Narnia.

***
Tashbaan

Olin and Gale were taking a diplomatic trip to Tashbaan, Calormen. It was to teach him to make peace with Calormen and how to deal with their relationship. Soon, they arrived in Tashbaan, and were welcomed by the grand vizier. They were staying at a guest house, close by the Tisroc's palace. The next day, they visited the Tisroc's courts.

"So, what brings you here?", asked the Tisroc.

"I am teaching my son on dealing with our relationship with Calormen", said King Olin, "He is to be the next king."

"Ah, yes, of course. And you, young prince, how will you deal with Calormen?"

"Tashbaan is a beautiful city", said Prince Gale, "From what I understand, it is a lot to be a king."

"You have a lot of responsibility as a prince and one day as a king, my son", said King Olin.

"Yes, father", then Gale turned to the Tisroc, "So how many visitors have there been from Narnia?"

"Oh, quite a few", said the Tisroc, "You barbarians are cursed, but you strike to me as quite a young man."

Gale knew he would have to take responsibility as a king one day. He would also have to deal with diplomatic relations with Calormen. And it would be a lot. While in Tashbaan, Olin and Gale drank some masala spice chai. It was delicious and spicy, though not anything like Narnian tea. They even attended dinner parties that the Tisroc was throwing as honored guests. Many tarkaans and tarkheenas attended, and were marveled at the fair king and prince of the North.

"How long will you be here?", asked the Tisroc.

"For a while", said King Olin, "Then we have a ship that was take us back to Narnia."

"If it is alright", said Gale, "May we explore the city while we're here?"

"Oh, yes, of course, your highness", said the Tisroc, "In fact, you're welcome to visit Calormen anytime."

"Why, thank you."

Gale looked on the city. During Olin and Gale's stay in Calormen, Gale was able to learn more about the country and its culture. However, his heart cut like a dagger when he discovered that Calormen lived in a culture of slavery and arranged marriages. What else? Human sacrifices were offered to a god called Tash. Now he was able to learn about how to deal with Calormen and its culture. Once he became king, it was important that Narnia and Calormen be at peace with one another. After being in Calormen for a while, Olin and Gale made it back to Narnia.

****
"Song of the Lonely Mountain" from The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey @Howard Shore and Neil Finn, all rights reserved and "Far Over The Misty Mountains Cold" from The Hobbit @JRR Tolkien, all rights reserved.]
***

They have both come from a noble family. Master Cordell's great-great-great grandfather started to run a Tavern in Narnia called the Dragon Inn, and was passed on from generation to generation. Master Cordell and Madam Adela moved to Narnia eventually and took over the Dragon Inn after his father retired. They welcomed guests from all over who needed a place of lodging. They were both born of noble family in Archenland as well.

"I know we've talked about having children", said Madam Adela, "It seems like we never will."

"I know you want to have a child", said Master Cordell, "I guess it's never meant to be."

While in Archenland, in a small town, they've learned a terrible plague that was struck in the cold winter month. Dozens of the population have died. For a while, it was under a pandemic. They met up with a man with a great beard and wearing a long robe.

"Coriakin", said Master Cordell, "What are you ding here in Archenland?"

"I've helping those who are sick from the plague and comforting those who have lost their loved ones", said Coriakin, "Master Cordell, what brings you and Madam Adela back in Archenland."

"We were visiting relatives. Then we've heard of the terrible plague that was struck."

"I also been looking after the orphans, those who've lost their parents during the plague. That is until they're found good homes."

"Madame Adela has been wanting a child. We never been able to."

"Coriakin", said a little girl with golden hair and blue-green eyes said, "When will I ever see my family again?"

"Marietta, they are in Aslan's country", said Coriakin.

"Who is this little girl?", asked Madam Adela.

"Her name is Marietta. She's a beautiful child. Her parents are among those who died of the plague. I've been looking after her for awhile."

"Is there anything we can do?", asked Master Cordell.

"Perhaps if she is willing, she can stay with you. Raise her as your own."

"In our tavern? Marietta, isn't it? Will you?"

"I've been needing a family", said Marietta.

"Then it's settled", said Coriakin.

Master Cordell and Madame Adela thanked Coriakin and took Marietta with them back to Chippingford, Narnia. Then to their tavern, the Dragon Inn, where she lived and worked when she grew into a young woman.

**
Years later-

It was a normal day in Narnia. It was a cold winter, but spring was here before time. The last king of Narnia, Tirian, called together his best friend, Jewel the unicorn, Bleakpond and Lilypaddle the Marshwiggles, Stonefoot the giant, Roonwit the Centaur, Farsight the Eagle for council. He was between 21 and 25 years old with a fearless, honest face, though his beard was scanty. His limbs were full of hard muscle and shoulders were broad. For a time Narnia was at peace. However, they had to be prepared for what is coming.

"Sire", said Jewel, "So what is to happen? We have not any invasion from the enemy."

"Yes", said Tirian, "We are at peace with Calormen."

"As I remember, you visited Tashbaan", said Bleakpond the marshwiggle, "And the Tisroc took you to the temple of Tash."

"Yes, Bleakpond. And Narnia has been at peace. My 7th great grand father King Rilian was stolen by a witch known as the Lady of the Green Kirtle."

"And a boy and girl came from beyond the world to rescue him", said Jewel.

Tirian knew well that the Calormenes have been wanting to enslave Narnia for centuries. It had been going on since the Golden Age. For centuries, Narnia and Calormen had a diplomatic relationship. Narnia's friend and ally was a country called Archenland, which is between Narnia and Calormen. However, for a long time, Calormen had wanted to enslave both countries and make them their own.

**
Far up into the west, there was an ape. He was old, no one knew how he came to live into those parts. His name was Shift, and he had a friend, a donkey named Puzzle. They said they were friends, but as things went on, Puzzle was more like Shift's servant. One day, the pair of them, walked along where the River Narnia flowed and the great waterfall. The pool was always dancing, churning, and bubbly. That's how it became known as Caldron Pool.

"Hey, look over there", said Shift, pointing with his dark skinny finger, "That yellow thing. It's floating."

"Where?", asked Puzzle.

"We must find out what it is. Now go in like a good fellow."

'Oh wouldn't it be better if you went into the pool, Shift? I only got hoofs. You'd be as good as a man or a dwarf."

"Really, Puzzle. You may not realize what weak chests apes have and can easily catch a cold. Very well. I'll go in. I'll possibly get sick and die."

"No, no. I'll go in. Promise me you won't do it, Shift."

"Alright. But you have to catch it before it floats away."

Puzzle went into the puzzle. There was some struggle, but was able to get the yellow thing. He brought out onto the shore. Shift held up it and knew what it was at once. It was a lion skin.

'Who do you think killed the poor lion?", asked Puzzle, "He ought to be buried.."

"It wasn't a talking lion", said Shift, "You don't need to bother about that. There are no talking beasts in these parts." Yes, it belonged to a dumb and wild lion. "I know, we'll use this lion skin to make a nice winter coat for you."

"Oh, I don't think it would be very respectful."

"Respectful to whom?"

"To the Great Lion.. to Aslan Himself."

"I'll tell you what. It's market day in Chippingford today", said Shift, "See if there are any oranges or bananas."

Puzzle went to Chippingford. Shift went swinging from branch to branch to his little house in the tree. He got out a pair a scissors and thread to sew the lion skin. He learned the skill of sewing from the dwarfs. Soon after, Puzzle came back, however with no oranges or bananas. Shift put the lion skin on Puzzle at once. There was some struggle and pulling, but was able to get it on. Puzzle might be mistaken as a lion if the lighting wasn't good and didn't let out a bray.

"If anyone saw you now, everyone would think you're the great lion Aslan himself", said Shift.

"That would be dreadful", said Puzzle.

"But think of the good we can do", said Shift, "You have me to advise you. I can think of sensible orders for you to give. Everyone now will have to obey us, even the King. We'll set everything right in Narnia."

"Isn't everything right already?"

"What about oranges and bananas? There's sugar too."

"Yes, it would be nice if there was more sugar."

"Then it's settled. You pretend to be Aslan and I'll tell you what to say."

"Oh do not say dreadful things, Shift. What will become of us when the real Aslan shows up?"

"I think He'd be pleased. He probably sent the lion skin to us on purpose so we can set things to right. Besides, he never turns up."

However there was a thunder clap. Puzzle said he knew they were doing something very wicked. Shift said that it was Aslan who sent the thunder clap, showing his approval.

***
A tavern in the town of Chippingford, Narnia was bustling with people running in and out. At times, some come to lounge there and some come for entertainment. Master Cordell and Madam Adela had always made sure things were running smoothly. There were different waiters and waitresses that worked there. Guests had come from all over- Narnia, Archenland, and Calormen. Marietta was one of the tavern maids that worked there. She was short and slender, a petite girl, and she had flawless fair skin with golden-hair and blue-green eyes. She wore a loose blouse with a teal bodice, pink skirt and sarong embellished with coins. She didn't wear a whole lot of jewelry, other than a pair of earrings that dangled down. She often went around bare foot. Another tavern maid was a friend of hers, Rhonda. She had brownish hair, and wore a loose blouse, skirt, and sarong with coins, like Marietta did. Master Cordell decided to have a talk with Marietta.

"Now, Marietta, you have bloomed into a beautiful young woman", said Master Cordell, "Most likely, you will be sought after by many men. Men would most likely be drawn to your beauty and singing voice."

"Well, it's about time we find for you a suitable husband", said Madam Adela, "Perhaps a lord of the Seven Isles or a prince of Terenbithia or the Duke of Anvard."

"You're the closest thing I had to a mother and father, Master Cordell and Madam Adela", said Marietta, "But whom I marry should be my decision, not yours."

"Is that even possible?", asked Master Cordell.

"Master Cordell, did you know right away that Madam Adela was the one?"

"Oh, it didn't worked like that. It took me a while to figure out if she really was the one. Then, of course, she was."

"And we have a very happy marriage", said Madam Adela.

"So suppose the right one did come along. I wonder if a lord from Archenland or a Tarkaan from Calormen would seek after me?"

"I think a Calormen Tarkaan would be drawn to your beauty, most likely. And you never know what they might be mostly interested in... from what I can understand, most likely not in you as a person."

"But suppose, what if they're not all like that?"

"Choose carefully, my dear", said Madam Adela.

**
The Tisroc was sitting on a cushion seat in his palace. He looked over a note he had gotten from Shift. For a time, Shift and the Tisroc were secret communication. For a long time, Calormen had been wanting to enslave Narnia and Archenland.

"Oh Tisroc (may you live forever)", said a Calormene soldier who seemed to be in command and was a Tarkaan with the gold ring on his arm, "Is it possible to take Narnia for our own?"

"Yes, Rishda", said the Tisroc, "However, it's been inhabited by demons in form of talking animals."

"Yes...do they hold strong magic there?"

"It is what I fear. Perhaps if you were to take your men... wait? I have received word from Shift. He said to make ready the navy. Perhaps there is a way to take it peacefully."

"Perhaps if I was to take 30 men, we can disguise ourselves as merchants to Narnia."

"That might do. Blessing of Tash be upon you, Rishda Tarkaan."

"To hear is to obey."

Rishda was given a blessing as he headed out of the courts of the Tisroc. He would soon gather up 30 soldiers and lead them to Narnia. Among the soldiers was a young man named Emeth. He was tall, dark, and beautiful in a rather dark, haughty Calormene way. He was the seventh son of Harpha Tarkaan of Teshibaan. His dear friend was Chlamash, the son of Lucius Tarkaan.

"So we are marching to Narnia?", asked Emeth.

"It sure sounds like it", said Chlamash.

"I've been praying to Tash that one day I would meet Narnians in battle."

"I think we will have opportunity. But tell me, what seems to be troubling you."

"What do you mean?"

"Come on, Emeth. We've known each other since we were boys. You're my best friend. You can tell me."

"My mother and father wanted to find a wife for me. It just doesn't seem right for a parent to choose a husband or wife for their son or daughter."

"And a Tarkaan has been known to have a younger wife. Yes... my mother is quite a few years younger than my father. And it was all arranged. I suppose your parents were as well."

"Yes, and well, my father is set his way. My six brothers have their wives chosen by our mother and father. I do not wish to follow that same footsteps. Chlamash, do you suppose I could have the right to choose a wife."

"I can't say. Maybe not in Calormen, but perhaps in the Northern countries, no one is forced to marry against their will."

"Perhaps if I love someone... maybe if were to seek Tash, and perhaps meet Narnians in battle."

'Well, you might get your wish or you might not."

Soon, Emeth and Chlamash were among the 30 men that Rishda was to lead to Narnia. Before they left, he gave instructions to them-

"Now, warriors of the Tisroc (may he live forever)", said Rishda, "You may have hoped to meet Narnians in battle. However, we do not plan to engage in a war with them. Instead. we are to go disguised as merchants and work by lies and trickery there. Any questions?"

"My father", said Chlamash, "How will this work?"

"We are not to let the Narnians know that we come to take their land. Oh, we are taking Narnia... we're just doing it in a peaceful way. So for right now, get some rest. We'll leave for Narnia tomorrow."

They went to get some rest, and Emeth wasn't all that pleased. He was hoping to meet Narnians in battle. But who knows? Maybe this strategy could work as well.

****
One night, upon the Calormenes arrival in Narnia, they made a stop in the town of Chippingford. It was the town where markets thrive and there was entertainment in the streets. While there, Emeth and Chlamash saw a sign, which read The Dragon Inn in big print. At the bottom, it read, Weary from Adventuring? Drag yourself on in.

"It looks like a good place for rest and recreation", said Emeth.

"I'm with you, my man", said Chlamash, "Perhaps we should check this place out."

They went inside the Dragon Inn and saw it was bustling with people going in and out. There was a group of tavern butlers and maids waiting on tables. There was even a sound of tale and laughter going around. And what else? There seemed to be guest from all over as well.

"Oh, two Calormenes", said Rhonda, "Nice to meet you. I am Rhonda. Allow me to show you your seats."

"Thank you", said Emeth.

And Rhonda showed them their seat at a table. In the mean time, Rishda had followed close behind to see what they were up to.

"There you two are", said Rishda, "What are two of my soldiers doing in a place like this?"

"Come on, my father", said Chlamash, "Don't you need a little rest and recreation after a long journey from Calormen?"

"I suppose. But still, this Tavern is no place for high class Tarkaans like us."

"Oh, we have guests that come from all over, Sir", said Rhonda, "Archenland, Calormen, Galma, Terenbithia, the Seven Isles, the Lone Islands."

Rishda sat a table with Emeth and Chlamash, and decided to have a talk with them over a drink.

"Well, the other soldiers find a market place", said Rishda, "They have market day every few other day."

"Is that so?", asked Chlamash.

"Perhaps, here in Chippingford, as merchants, we can make them think we're selling goods imported from Calormen. Oh, and I've met with an ape named Shift. He says that Aslan is in Narnia."

"Oh, do we have to wait upon a monkey?", asked Emeth, rolling his eyes.

"That's what he wants.."

Next moment, they heard singing. They wondered where it was coming from. It sounded beautiful, that was for sure. Her voice was high, ringing and clear, and very agile. Rishda was struck by the beauty of the sound, but oh, wait. He knew came to conquer Narnia by peace, and was not to think of a young woman in such a way. Emeth was drawn to the singing as well. He had been hoping to meet Narnians in battle. But could this have changed, he wondered.

***

***

I know it's been a (long) while since I've been here, I hope you're all doing well.
I need help finding a fic, and was wondering if anyone could remember the title of it. The fic was a fic about some charming snake dude who charmed his way right into the palace and one of the siblings (I think it was Ed? Or maybe it was Lu and Ed believed her) was like "hold up I think this guy is shifty", and it comes to the snake dude holding Susan in a trance of sorts and Edmund (and maybe Peter as well?) having to make a trek to get some super rare cure to save Susan. And I do recall that at the place, there was a large hole, and if I remember correctly, one has to let go of the cure to save their brother but it's okay because a bird catches it and brings it back up. That's what I can remember of it; does anyone know the title of it or where I can find it?

{ AUTHOR’S NOTE: Eirlys is pronounced Ear-Lease}

PROLOGUE

“Born of ice and all that is cruel, here she is, my heir to this new Narnia, the first of the new age, you’re Princess and future Queen, Eirlys! Rejoice with me my people! Aslan thought he could win this war but she is our key! Our snowdrop in a desert!” the pale skinned woman exclaimed from her castle balcony with a voice so thunderous it made the men in her army quake in their metal armor as they did as was told and yelled in excitement for the future of this cold kingdom. “Long live Princess Eirlys! To the new Kingdom!” the crowd cheered with such excitement it made the ground beneath them shake as they beheld their Queen, Jadis outstretch her arms and show them the small white bundle of blanket which contained the newly born princess. She too had pale skin. This tiny baby had short locks of dark brown hair which reached her chin and eyes black as the deepest cave with no light. Jadis smiled in satisfaction and cradled the child in her arms once again and with a small grin she looked out on the crowd and bellowed, “Let the festivities begin!” before going into her castle and had the child’s governess, Luminess, dress the baby for the event. She was after all going to be passed around so that all may know their new princess. Luminess gently took the child and smiled down at her, “Yes your majesty.” She replied in a voice so soothing it could make any screaming child calm when they heard it. As Jadis let out a satisfied hum and left the room, Luminess carried the baby to her room and laid her on a light blue changing station and began looking for a dress for her to wear. “How about this one your highness?” the black haired fawn asked as she held up a light blue dress with pretty frills on the sleeves and a puffy skirt. Eirlys blinked and of course didn’t understand but rather found her hands rather fascinating and played with them. Luminess sighed and smiled softly. “How about this beautiful periwinkle dress?” she once again asked for the now fifth time in a row. This time however, Eirlys looked at it and smiled while rubbing her left eye and reaching for the sparkly dress. “This one it is then princess.” Luminess cheered and readied the little princess for her debut.
“Come Eirlys, I want to show you something.” the pale woman spoke softly and gestured to the now four year old girl to follow her. “Coming mommy.” the young girl replied happily and got up from the floor, leaving her toys behind and following her mother. They walked through a frozen garden and into an old tower, a tower she was told to never step foot in. “Mommy where are we going?” the brown haired girl asked as she now was hesitant and for some reason, she felt scared and stood at the doorway as her mother walked in. Jadis walked deeper into the tower and noticed her daughter wasn’t following, “Are you coming or not?” she said in a flat tone, almost sounding threatening to the ears of the scared child before her. “Y-yes mommy.” Eirlys replied shakily in a tone so quiet not even a mouse would hear it. She swallowed hard and took a step towards her mother who watched intently. “Come now don’t be frightened. You and I are the only ones here my love. You have nothing to fear.” Jadis assured her and it seemed to calm the small girl since she moved faster now and followed close behind her. They walked down a spiral tunnel for what seemed like an eternity. It was so cold the water along the walls were frozen and every step was slippery as you could hear the ice on the stairs crunch and crack. The walls themselves held candles which were lit and provided very little light, barely enough to light up their path so they wouldn’t trip. When they arrived at the bottom, they came across a glowing white sigil on the ground in the shape of a snowflake. The little girl’s black eyes widened in delight as she ran over to get a better look. “You like it?” her mother asked as she took a vial off a table and opened it. The child nodded in excitement and ran back to her mother. “What is that?” she asked in curiosity as she tilted her head slightly to the side. “This my dear is what I wanted to show you.” the mother smiled warmly and proceded to project ice from her hand. “This is the source of our power.” she continued. Of course now the girl’s eyes were wide in astonishment and wonder. She laughed in excitement and hugged her mother, “Why are you hugging me?” Jadis asked, holding back her disdain since she was only four after all. “Sorry mommy. I forgot you don’t like that.” the poor girl mumbled sadly. “It’s just I was so happy you could do the magic too!” Eirlys continued while playing with the hem of her sweater. Now Jadis was curious, “What do you mean I can do it too?” she asked as she lowered herself to Eirlys’ height and held her small hands in her large ones. “Well yeah. I can do it too look.” The young one removed her hands from her mother’s grasp and outstretched her hands towards the wall and ice proceeded to project from her hands. Jadis was stunned and stood to her full height with wide eyes. She was speechless for a moment as she beheld the ice wall that was before her. This made Eirlys worried. Was she in trouble? Why was her mother staring that way? “H-how did you do that?” Jadis glanced at her child and regained her composure. “I don’t know. I got mad one day and it just happened.” the child replied as she kicked a pebble by her shoe. “I see. Why didn’t you tell me?” Jadis asked now calming down. “I thought you would be mad at me. I can’t control very well so sometimes it just happens.” Eirlys let out a sigh of relief. Jadis smiled proudly and picked up her daughter in her arms. “Oh Eirlys, you can always trust me with these things. As a matter of fact, what you have is truly a magnificent gift indeed! It normally takes many years of hard work and training to even get to your level of ice!” she doted and praised her. Eirlys beamed brightly, “Really?!” She questioned curiously. “Of course! As for controlling it, we’ll work on it.” Jadis smiled as she carried her child back upstairs and inside the castle. “Why don’t you go play and we can train later alright?” the Queen spoke softly as she watched Eirlys run into the play room. “Aren’t you going to tell her?” Luminess questioned in a concerned tone. “Tell her what?” Jadis asked innocently with a straight face. “You know what Jadis! You’re magic is against everything Narnia stands for. Above all else, it goes against Aslan.” she snapped at the queen. “Are you forgetting who you are talking to?” Jadis scoffed, her voice growing louder with every word. “I AM YOUR QUEEN! Aslan is not coming back. This is why you’re here to begin with slave! You will stand and watch as I tear Narnia to shreds in this endless winter! Then and only then will I kill you.” Jadis threatened coldly while aiming her sceptre at Luminess’ throat. “I-I understand.” Luminess said in a tone that seemed as though she had been crying for hours. She was heartbroken to say the least at the destruction of her home but she always remained hopeful that one day her King would return. That the prophecy would be fulfilled and that Narnia would have Spring again. So she secretly taught Eirlys of the prophecy. How two sons of Adam and Two daughters of Eve would come and defeat the White Witch and bring an end to Winter and Aslan would return to Narnia and bring peace.

       Chapter One
The Boy

As time went on Eirlys grew up, she learned to control her powers but one day her once loving mother had a change of heart. Her happiness was destroyed and she was taken from her castle bedroom so lavishly furnished, to a dungeon in the lower levels of the castle made entirely of ice. She had been here for three years now with no one to talk to but herself. She would often talk to herself daily to keep her sanity and from time to time Redwood, one of her mother's wolves would keep her company and chat with her but usually, she had a schedule. She’d look around her and notice if the ice has melted or if any icicle grew, she would write on the walls with a shard of ice she had but after a while her hands would grow numb from the cold which forced her to stop and sigh, Luminess would sneak her a warm meal at least every other day but meanwhile she would nibble on frozen bread her mother would give her and even chew on ice just to trick herself into thinking it’s something good to eat but today was different. Jadis came in this morning with Luminess and two other maids in a fit of rage but she hid it well. “Get up.” she commanded in the coldest tone. She tried standing up but the lack of strength made her fall to her knees. “I said get up!” Jadis exclaimed in anger. “Get her strength up now! I want her dressed like the princess she is and bathed and ready to come with me immediately!” she snarled at the maids as they helped me up and led me to the bathing room upstairs. “Oh my dear I’m so sorry.” Luminess whispered to herself as she gestured for the other two to leave them alone so she could bathe her. Eirlys was embarrassed to say the least but didn’t have the strength to argue so she left it at that. Once that was done, they had her put on a gorgeous dark blue dress with white trim and put her hair into a ponytail nicely and led her to the dining room so she could eat and gain some strength for a while. She remained stone cold and silent as she ate her soup and drank her water. “How are you feeling?” Luminess asked kindly. “Does it matter? She’ll just get what she wants and make me do what she wants then throw me back in that rotten dungeon.” Eirlys replied through gritted teeth, her stare not leaving the bowl of soup in front of her. She was no longer the bright eyed child she was back then. She changed in these three years as anyone would. She was so filled with anger and bitterness that it changed her graceful disposition into that of a snarling beast waiting to attack it’s prey, this is what worried Luminess greatly. “My dear, don’t you remember the prophecy I told you?” she gulped. “What about it?” Eirlys rolled her eyes in annoyance. “I believe it’s unfolding as we speak. Rumour has it that a daughter of Eve has been spotted!” Luminess beamed with hope. The young girl burst into a fit of hysteric laughter so much so that tears were streaming down her face from laughing so hard. “You don’t expect me to believe me that childish story do you?” she exclaimed in between breaths while panting for air. Luminess’ heart sunk to her stomach, this child she had raised had completely denounced her teachings. “I pray Aslan comes quickly…” she mumbled and led a still laughing Eirlys to her mother's sleigh where Jadis was awaiting. “Hurry up Eirlys, we’ve no time to lose!” she hurried. “Right.” Eirlys sighed and composed herself as she climbed in and off they went.

The ride was terribly silent until the sleigh stopped. Someone got in the way and I couldn’t help but laugh. ‘What fool was dumb enough to not clear the way for the queen?’ I thought to myself with a small laugh. A smile of amusement etched onto my lips as I saw mother get off and stop Ginarrbrik from hitting the trespasser. I stood up in curiosity and glanced at the sight, I couldn’t tell what they were saying but she suddenly began walking with a dark haired boy around my own age, they were walking towards the sleigh and I quickly took my seat, hopefully without her noticing my curiosity. “Come sit with me.” she told the boy who hesitantly got in the sleigh and glanced at me before between my mother and I at her command. “Darling don’t be rude, we have a guest. What do we say to guests?” she stated in such a sweet tone anyone who didn’t know her would be fooled easily by it, to me it was such a venomous underlining of a sweet tone. Like honeysuckle laced with botulinum and the glare she gave me had the same tone. I smiled fakely but enough to convince the boy that he was safe. “It’s a pleasure to meet you. I’m Eirlys.” I introduced kindly. I don’t know why but I suddenly felt as if the worst was about to happen. I had never in all eleven years in my life felt this scared in my life but I tried my best to hide it. He smiled sweetly, “Nice to meet you Eirlys, I’m Edmund.” he replied with a voice that seemed calming and reassuring. Unlike anything I was used to. My mother quickly noticed how cold he was and gave him her fur coat. Now I knew something was going on for sure. She even gave him a warm drink and some sort of candy, I’m assuming it is candy but I have never heard of Turkish Delight in my life. He offered me one but I had a gut feeling telling me to refuse his offer. I felt even worse when I remembered where the candy had come from and what could have been done to it. “Tell me Edmund, do you have siblings?” mother asked sickly sweet while smiling down at him. “I have my brother Peter and my sisters Lucy and Susan but they’re nothing special.” he said in a matter of fact tone which caused me to let out a snicker and he looked at me oddly. “Sorry.” I apologised and kept to myself, feeling the cold glare from my mother. “How about you bring them here with you next time?” she asked him. “Why?” he sassed. “A king needs servants you know?” she smiled. “You can make me king? What about Eirlys?” he mused. “Eirlys is my servant. You can be king.” she answered coldly. I stared at the ground, pushing back tears. Even after that day, I knew she didn’t see me as her heir or child but as a prisoner held for ransom. “Oh, I thought she was your daughter though.” Edmund countered as he looked at me. “No, I’m merely a servant sir.” I replied softly. “But you two look so similar!” He replied unconvinced. “That girl is not my daughter Edmund now listen to me! Bring your siblings to my castle up there between those mountains and I will make you king over all of Narnia!” She barked at him coldly while catching his attention and pointing between the mountains she spoke of. “Alright. I ‘ll do it then. But can I have more candy?” he asked shyly. “Only if you do this for me.” She rudely replied which was enough to send him on his way. “See you later Eirlys.” he waved at me and of course I waved back as we rode away, leaving him behind as I saw a little girl a bit younger than I am run up to him. I then heard a voice whisper to me, “Don’t tell Jadis. Leave them alone or you will suffer a worse fate.” I knew that voice wasn’t my own but I had never heard it before and it sounded like thunder on a dark rainy day so I decided it best to listen to it and not say anything.

As I sat in my cell once we returned, my thoughts drifted off into space as I thought about that boy and girl. I thought about the prophecy that Luminess reminded me of. I thought about the way my mother acted around the boy and asked of his family. I thought about the worried look in her eye when he mentioned he had a brother and two sisters. At first I thought it was a coincidence but now, maybe just maybe, could they be the ones the prophecy spoke about? Could they be the sons of Adam and daughters of Eve? Why would my mother give the kingdom to this boy? Would she give it to him or would she treat him the way she treated me? If he is one of the sons of Adam then I am in deep trouble. The candy Edmund ate was laced with a strong magic that would have him coming back for more and the more he ate, the stronger the magic would be over him. I let him eat it without warning him. I should have warned him as that voice instructed. Who was that voice? I need to warn Edmund. I don’t even know if the prophecy is true. What if I am right and it is a lie? My main question is this, where and who is Aslan and will he return soon if this prophecy is true?

When I arrived in my cell this time, I noticed something different. Through the cracks of my ice wall, I could see into the next cell. Curiosity seems to be my strong suit right now as I peered into the crack as Luminess drew close from my left which faced the cell door. There was a faun in the next cell. He was chained to the floor, unlike me who was free to walk around in my cell for an hour a day. “Dear I’ve brought you lunch.” Luminess whispered quietly. “What about him?” I asked with a softness in my voice. Luminess glanced at the faun in the next cell. “He must be new, that cell was empty a few days ago.” she pondered. “I see.” was my reply as she handed me the sandwich and canteen of water. “Thank you Luminess.” I smiled at her as she waved and left in a hurry before she was seen. I once again glanced into the next cell. “H-hello?” I called out quietly. He seemed to have panicked and was shaking from the cold. “W-w-who’s there?” he asked shakily. “I’m in the cell next to you. There’s a crack in the wall and I can see you. Can you see me?” I asked curiously. He scooted himself towards me and peered back into the wall. “I believe I can see you now miss.” he half-heartedly chuckled. I smiled. “So why are you here?” I asked with a sigh. “They say I commited treason. I hid a daughter of Eve from the White Witch after I told her I had her.” he sighed with regret. “You know a daughter of Eve?!” I asked excitedly. “Shhh!” he replied with a finger to his lips. “My bad.” I whispered apologetically. “Yes. She had short brown hair and a green sweater.” he began describing the girl and my eyes widened. That was the girl with Edmund. “Her name was Lucy. She was so kind!” he continued with a smile. “So that’s her name.” I whispered. “Do you really think the prophecy is true?” I asked and he looked at me as if I had two heads.

“You mean you don’t think it’s true?” he asked in disbelief. “Well….I still haven’t made up my mind. At times I think it’s true but then other times I think otherwise. I don’t know what I believe anymore.” The brunete sighed in confusion. She was torn to say the least. She didn’t have any hope but she desperately wanted to hope that Aslan would return and that the prophecy would come true but how could she hope when her world was full of darkness? “I see. Oh how rude of me, I’m Tumnus.” he said with a smile. I smiled in return and gave him my sandwich to which he nodded in thanks. “Oh it’s nice to meet you Tumnus, I’m -” I was cut off when a guard dragged me away. “Come on princess, you’re getting a new cell.” Ginarrbrik scoffed and threw me by my arm into a cell a few spaces over from Tumnus. This one looked more like a jail than a dungeon and I could see Tumnus clearly from where I was. Ginarrbrik cuffed my hands in some special cuffs made for my magic and chained me to the floor like he did the first time I was in the dungeon. “I don’t understand.” I began but he slapped me and I fell back onto the cold ice. “We have another prisoner.” Ginarrbrik snarled and another was brought into the cell next to me. “Edmund?!” I asked in shock and he looked at me with pain in his eyes as my mother came in. “No talking!” She yelled at me. I stared away and sighed. She and Ginarrbrik walked away while Luminess came out of her hiding. “The time has come my child. The prophecy is unfolding. You were born for a reason.” she said as she unlocked my cell. “I will stay here, take this letter and follow the wind. The wind will take you to a small village called Securas, there you will find an older couple named Ziv and Aldo. There you will find answers to whatever questions you will have. Now go! There isn’t much time! Run and don’t look back. Trust no one!” Luminess tried rushing and reassuring me as I glanced back at Edmund. “Hurry before it’s too late!” Edmund cheered in approval yet sadness. “I promise I’ll come back for you both!” She exclaimed before running out as soon as Luminess undid the cuffs. “Follow the wind and be on guard!” Luminess exclaimed as the young girl ran out of the castle and into the courtyard and mounds of snow. “Don’t you worry your highness. I received word by a friend that Aslan is on the move!” Luminess smiled with tears in her eyes. Her hope was finally on his way as she watched the girl disappear from her sight. “Aslan grant her the wisdom and courage to do what must be done.” she prayed and hurried into the castle again, leaving Edmund and Tumnus alone.

Evelyn Watson sat on her hands, waiting for her parents to finish speaking to the matron. She glanced around at the dull, ordinary and oh-so-British surroundings. Floral wallpaper, needlepoint cushions. The room was sedate, down to the cat sleeping in a basket in the corner. The heavy curtains let in too little light, too little air. So little she might have bolted—certainly her mother had expected her to do so if left alone—except for one thing. The room smelled wrong. It smelled like summer and crisp mountain air and apples, and then when she tried to concentrate on the scent she decided she didn’t smell anything at all. Like peripheral vision. Something she couldn’t quite catch.

She should never have told her parents she’d been to another world.
---
“Will she be all right?” Mrs. Watson asked.

The matron sat with her hands folded on her desk. “It’s impossible to say, but there is hope. I am used to caring for special cases like your daughter. This is not the sort of institution you read about in the papers. I care about my students.”

“And then, when she’s cured, she’ll be able to come home to us?” Mr. Watson asked.

The matron gave him a steady look. “You must understand that she may never be just as she was.”

“But she’s talking nonsense about visiting other worlds, other worlds, Miss Plummer!”

“Yes, but I hope in time she will be better able to make her way in this one.” The matron offered him her best reassuring smile.

In the end, the papers were signed, and the matron had a new resident at Miss Plummer's Academy for Unconventional Education (or Chinks and Chasms as she liked to call it), the home for children who had once lost their way in other worlds.

***

This story is inspired by several books and fanfics, including Tonzura’s “To Rend the Worlds”, Almyra’s “Land of Make Believe”, “The Light Between Worlds” novel by Laura E. Weymouth, and others. One story dealt with a home for children who had returned from other worlds and were then thought mad by their parents. I have reimagined this with Polly as the matron. Join me in some collaborative storytelling as we explore the possibilities.

Basic premise:
Polly runs a home for children who have returned from other worlds and been unwise enough to speak about them.

Conflict:
Some unsettling things from those other worlds are about to find their way into ours and the students and faculty must deal with them with the skills they learned on their travels. None of these skills may be magical, though some of the threats may be.

Rules:

Keep it PG.

Be courteous.

In accordance with canon, none of the students in the home have visited Narnia. (One or two possible exceptions may be alluded to, but they will not be students.) If you introduce a student they may have visited Wonderland, Oz, Neverland, or another land of your own invention. (No Westeros or Hogwarts, please.) Other, non-portal worlds like Middle Earth or Aerwiar might be worked in if you can make it convincing (Maybe a character who keeps dreaming of Numenor and a great wave and spouting Elvish in accordance with The Lost Road or Notion Club Papers?)

The Pevensies, Eustace, Jill, and Professor Kirke are fair game to visit the school or Polly or become involved in the plot. Just keep them in character. :)

When you complete a scene, feel free to suggest an option or two as to what the next scene might be, to spark ideas. The next writer may use your suggestion for inspiration or decide to build on your foundation another way.

I hope you’ll join in for this adventure.

Possible follow-up scenes: The Watsons depart and Miss Plummer welcomes Evelyn to the school. (I imagine Evelyn’s world as one peopled with babbling, talking waters and lots of shimmering light.)

Ready. Set. Go!
