There's been no official announcement of who will direct the new Narnia film franchise as of yet.

I think Walden's VDT fell flat when Michael Apted was the director instead of Andrew Adamson. It wasn't the same without him!

I actually don't really see Christopher Nolan, best known for The Dark Knight Trilogy and Inception, directing a Narnia film franchise. I don't see Steven Spielberg doing it, because he is a big time producer, with movies like Jaw and E.T. and Jurassic Park. I don't even see Peter Jackson, director of The Lord of the Rings Film Trilogy, doing it. I mean, nothing against any of those because they are great movie makers. Peter Jackson was unheard of when he directed The Lord of the Rings Trilogy and got most of it right. The Hobbit was well done from a cinematic view point but that's kind of besides the point. Christopher Nolan had his own take of Batman than Tim Burton, and capture the feel just right. Steven Spielberg had made some great movies, like E.T., Jurassic Park, and Lincoln. But I don't see any of them doing Narnia.

Narnia films won't be the same without Andrew Adamson. Though, I will greatly appreciate for whatever director the film series will have, that he or she has a creative vision. Perhaps, a lesser known instead of a big time Hollywood director would be nice for a change! :)

Any thoughts on a director for Narnia film series?

I think one of the biggest challenges will be on how to do the transition from Earth to Narnia on screen.

The way that CS Lewis described in each of the books are great. Yet somehow, some of these will probably be re-imagined for a film or series.

I think in LWW, we have next to nothing to worry about. It's pretty simple, with going into the wardrobe. So I don't see why they would have to re-imagine that.

In PC, the book describes as the Pevensies feeling as something is pulling them, then at an instance they're in Narnia. The way they did it in the Walden was a this huge epic train station disappearing and the train going by. It will be interesting how a new PC film will do the transition there.

In VDT, the book describes it as the picture in the bedroom getting bigger. In the Walden, they had the water gushing out the painting and flooding the room. It might be cool to see the picture bigger, and make us wonder, "Is the picture getting bigger or are the kids getting smaller?" Yet again, it might not happen that way.

In SC, it's pretty simple as well. All it is Eustace and Jill getting away from the school bullies and they find a door that leads to Narnia.

In HBB, I think we have next to nothing to worry about since there's no transition from Earth to Narnia involved. That is unless they decide to have it end with the Hunting of the White Stag and have the Pevensies come out of the wardrobe, given that it takes during LWW.

In MN, it might be a little tricky. Digory and Polly put on the rings and disappear into another world. Then they come up on the the pools in the Wood Between the Worlds. Then they jump into a different pool that leads into different worlds- Charn and Narnia that is.

In LB, it might be a little trickier. It's taken from a different perspective. Tirian calls to the Friends of Narnia for help. Then a moment, Eustace and Jill show up. So that might be a little tricky on how to do the transition.

Any ideas on how a film or series would do transition from Earth to Narnia? Should be kept simple? Will a movie or series have to re-imagine some of these?

As most of you know, there seems to be a pairing of two characters, especially in Hollywood productions. Then there's also the pairing of a baddie and a goodie or in other words- A Villainous Crush.

MN- Andrew does fantasize about how Jadis will fall in love with him. She might like him in return. Though it would be pretty pointless.

LWW- Edmund is attracted to the White Witch, but I wouldn't call this a crush. I think it's because of his desire for power.

HHB- Prince Rabadash wants to marry Susan. He hates her for turning him down but it makes him want her all the more. That's a villainous crush in a movie I would accept. It could make an interesting twist if they show Rabadash as a nice guy in Cair Paravel and show his true nature in Tashbaan.

PC- I actually don't see that happening in this. Miraz is a married man, so there would be no point.

VDT- I don't see that happening in even this. Hey, this story doesn't even have a villain.

SC- I think the closest we come to is the Lady of the Green Kirtle and Prince Rilian. She most likely enchanted him to ask her to marry him. Perhaps she knew he was heir to the throne of Narnia and thought that the only way she could become queen of Narnia legally was by marrying him.

LB- I actually don't see that happening in this either. I know I did one in my LB fanfic, but I actually don't see it happening in a movie. Shift is an ape, so that would be too weird. The only human villain in this is Rishda, but I don't see him crushing on a heroine in a movie.

So any thoughts on a pair of goodies and baddies or villainous crushes in Narnia movies?

CS Lewis have once said:

"Let there be wicked kings and beheadings, battles and dungeons, giants and dragons, and let villains be soundly killed at the end of the book. Nothing will persuade me that this causes an ordinary child any kind or degree of fear beyond what it wants, and needs, to feel. For, of course, it wants to be a little frightened.

There would be a concern how the Narnia movies would be rated. Even with how ratings are done differently around the world, they do have one thing in common- each ratings are usually done by tone of violence, language, sexuality, drug use, and drinking. This would be especially a concern for parents.

There are violent moments in Narnia, and any of them can easily be taken to a PG-13 level or even an R level (here in the US, that is). For example, the scene where the White Witch kills Aslan on the Stone Table could easily been shown. Both book and adaption tend to look away but you still know it happens.

Any thoughts on how the rating system should be for Narnia movies?

Since the announcement of Netflix adapting Narnia into films and series, we still don't know a whole lot about it. I think we can take a time to talk about what we don't want and what we're afraid of what might happened.

First of all, there are two things that I certainly don't want to happened.

1. I think the first that comes to mind is that I don't want is to have the plot to be taken from the original source. What I mean is that I expect changes to be made because that's what adaptations do. I think the main issue I had with Walden's Voyage of the Dawn Treader was that it took so far from the original source. Instead of being about finding seven lost noblemen, they made it about finding seven swords to fight the green mist. So hopefully Netflix doesn't do that. For instance, while The Horse and His Boy is kind of a "saving the world" type story, it should really be about Shasta making this journey to "Narnia and the North", and learning about himself. It's like, "I'm not the son of the fisherman Arsheesh. Who am I then? Am I a son of a Tarkaan myself or of the Tisroc?" "Oh, I must be something Northern." It should be about that.

2. Now, whichever actress Netflix cast as the White Witch in The Magician's Nephew and The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe, I don't want Netflix to put her in The Silver Chair. I mean, they should not allude to the idea that the White Witch and the Lady of the Green Kirtle are the same person. They're not, despite of all the speculations that's been going on over the years. While it's true they cast Barbara Kellerman in the BBC as both the White Witch and the Green Lady, they didn't even address that they're the same person. I think they did it for budgetary reasons. So, it's something that has to be made clear, kind of like, "Oh, why aren't Prince Rabadash and Rishda Tarkaan the same person? Do I need to list the reasons?" In The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe, there's a prophecy that the reign of the Pevensies at Cair Paravel would mark the end of the White Witch's reign and of her life. What else? Aslan killed her, and he meant it! In The Silver Chair, old Narnians address, "Those Northern witches have always meant for the same thing. But in every age, they each have their own way of getting it." So it's clear there that they're not the same person. Netflix should make new things. It would be like casting the same actor to play Prince Rabadash in The Horse and His Boy and Rishda Tarkaan in The Last Battle, which I don't want either. It's a huge concern for Narnia fans because it seemed that Walden's Voyage of the Dawn Treader were trending in the direction of setting the White Witch up to become the Lady of the Green Kirtle, and Narnia fans were freaking out, "No!" So yeah, let each of the villains be his or her own villain. You can have two Northern witches in Narnia history but they don't have to be the same one. You can even have two upper class princes or Tarkaans or whatever in Calormene history, but they don't have to be the same one.

Now I'll get on the record of what is a combination of a "no' and "fear". What I mean is that it's like, "I don't want to happen" yet at the same time I'm kind of fearful of it-
Romance is kind of the thing for Hollywood these days. I mean, it could happen with Digory and Polly in The Magician's Nephew, Shasta and Aravis in The Horse and His Boy (though they end up getting married), Eustace and Jill in The Silver Chair, and even a love triangle with Tirian, Eustace, and Jill in The Last Battle. I mean there are two guys and one girl. So they're both going to like her. So Jill, while she could care less, she would have to decide does she want to be with Eustace or does she want to be with Tirian. I think romance often happens because it's the easiest way for marketing. Often in Hollywood, if a guy and a girl are that close, they have to be in love. If you think about it, real life is not like that. I mean, how often in Hollywood productions do we see a guy and girl have a close friendship and that's it? It doesn't happen very often. I think there's good opportunity for Netflix to have a guy and girl being close friends that it's not necessarily romance. I think another that's on the trend is where an evil villain has an attraction the main hero or heroine. It would actually work well for The Horse and His Boy, because it is such a major conflict. Prince Rabadash wants to marry Susan, it's like, he can't even sleep. He actually hates her for rejecting his marriage proposal, but it makes him want her all the more. I guess there is kind of an villainous attraction in The Silver Chair. The Green Lady had one point enchanted Prince Rilian to ask her to marry him (it's more of an afterthought though). And another possible way it could happen is Rishda having an attraction to Jill in The Last Battle. I mean, the two other villains are an ape and a cat, so it's the Calormene captain that's going to like her. There's a moment in the book where Rishda tries to make up for his unbelief in Tash by hurling all of the heroes into the stable, and setting it on fire as an offering to Tash. It would be the easiest thing for Netflix to have Rishda having an attraction to Jill, and she would have to go through the stable because he won't take "no" for an answer. While I don't think romance of any will happened, I am kind of fearful of it. Thought we should throw it out there just in case.

So now here's what my fear is-
I'm afraid that the portrayal of the Calormenes will be stereotyped. I mean, it deals with culture of slavery, arranged marriages, worship of gods and goddesses, human sacrifice to Tash. The upper class, Tarkaans and Tarkheenas, tend to be self-indulgent. It would be easiest thing to say, "Oh, they're all like that." Aravis is kind of arrogant, but she has character development. She learns that there's so much more than just big parties and extravagant lifestyle, which is the total opposite of Lasaraleen. Emeth worships out of love and devotion, and he's not anything like Rishda. If the Calormenes are done right, who knows? Both Rabadash and Rishda could end up being iconic villains. Even Aravis and Emeth could both end up being iconic characters, because they both get to enter Aslan's country. Emeth is my favorite character in the whole series. He doesn't have a very big role in the book, but I'd be fine if Netflix wants to give him a bigger role. So yeah, I am afraid that the portrayal of the Calormenes will be typecast.

So what are things you don't want Netflix to do for Narnia and what are you afraid of what could happened?

I've been thinking about the structure of the Voyage of the Dawn Treader and how much it doesn't fit into the traditional movie structure. If someone were watching a direct adaptation on film it would feel like a lot of plotlines were introduced and then dropped or wrapped up too quickly. All these sea people with spears, is that leading somewhere? No, nope we just never see them again. I don't think this is an actual flaw in the book, but it doesn't work in a film because of viewers' expectations.

I think most of the flaws in the Walden film were bad attempts to solve this problem. The obvious solution is to make it a miniseries, but it might be an interesting thought experiment to consider how you would adapt it if you did have to make it into a single story arc. This might require some drastic changes, but I think it would be possible to do that while still retaining more of the essence of the book than the Walden film did.

I'm going to give this some thought before I post more, but I'd be very curious to hear your thoughts on this.

LEWIS’ BELOVED THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA

Hollywood, Calif. - October 3, 2018 -- Netflix will develop new series and film projects based on C.S. Lewis’ beloved The Chronicles of Narnia series. Under the terms of a multi-year deal between Netflix and The C.S. Lewis Company, Netflix will develop classic stories from across the Narnia universe into series and films for its members worldwide. All series and films produced through the deal will be Netflix productions, with Mark Gordon of Entertainment One (eOne) alongside Douglas Gresham and Vincent Sieber serving as executive producers for series and as producers for features. In total the Narnia books have sold more than 100 million copies and been translated in more than 47 languages worldwide. The deal marks the first time that rights to the entire seven books of the Narnia universe have been held by the same company.

“C.S. Lewis’ beloved Chronicles of Narnia stories have resonated with generations of readers around the world,” said Ted Sarandos, Chief Content Officer, Netflix. “Families have fallen in love with characters like Aslan and the entire world of Narnia, and we’re thrilled to be their home for years to come.”

“It is wonderful to know that folks from all over are looking forward to seeing more of Narnia, and that the advances in production and distribution technology have made it possible for us to make Narnian adventures come to life all over the world,” said Douglas Gresham, stepson of C.S. Lewis. “Netflix seems to be the very best medium with which to achieve this aim, and I am looking forward to working with them towards this goal.”

“Narnia is one of those rare properties that spans multiple generations and geographies,” said Mark Gordon, eOne’s President and Chief Content Officer, Film & Television. “eOne and I are excited to be collaborating with The C.S. Lewis Company and Netflix who have the capacity to translate the Narnia universe into both stellar feature-length and episodic programming. We cannot wait to get started on the multiple productions we hope to undertake.”
