OVERVIEW

How can we encounter in a new way both the friendship and the ideas of C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien, two men who did so much to shape our imaginations? Their shared commitments fostered a deep connection between them. Yet their visions were also in tension – Lewis driven by the concept of mythos, and Tolkien by logos. How can our own imaginations be fired by the story of this complex fellowship?

John Hendrix has done so in an innovative way through a graphic novel biography, The Mythmakers: The Remarkable Fellowship of C.S. Lewis & J.R.R. Tolkien. With an extraordinary blend of visual art and text, he brings these men and their world-shaping ideas to life.

Wade Center Continuing Scholars 2025-2026 Application info

Announcement:
Application submissions for the 2025-26 Wade Center Continuing Scholars Program, are now being accepted through August 15, 2025.
The Wade Center is a goldmine of original editions, manuscripts, letters, recordings and more --by C. S. Lewis and six other authors who either influenced him or who were in his circles: J.R.R. Tolkien, George MacDonald, Owen Barfield, G.K. Chesterton, Dorothy Sayers, Charles Williams.

This nine-month program "engages works by and about the Wade's seven featured authors to promote lifelong learning, convivial conversation, and spiritual encouragement in the Christian faith."

Program participants attend lectures, discuss a book by one of the seven featured authors, and explore the riches of the Wade's collections. This year's book selection is J.R.R. Tolkien's The Fellowship of the Ring.

Note: I got selected to participate in this wonderful program this past year as part of the virtual cohort, and I definitely, highly recommend it! The requirements are not onerous, and actually I found it delightful to be challenged to pick a work that I had not yet read to study (I chose to read Dorothy Sayers's 12-play cycle on the Life of Christ, The Man Born to Be King. These plays were originally broadcast via radio, so it was a treat getting to listen to recordings of all 12 of the original broadcasts (1942-43) at the Wade! I flew to the Wade Center in early March, so this experience was an unforgettable, poignant and powerful kick-off to Lent for me this year!)

As for the book that was chosen for group discussion this past year, it happened to be my favorite Non-Narnian book by Lewis: The Great Divorce. I also loved attending Wade Center presentations and lectures during the year -- only four were required but I ended up zooming in to many more. What a stimulating fulfilling experience! (And if you go to the Wade, you get to see the wardrobe that was in the Lewis family!)

New Character Builder - Suggestions Wanted

Hi folks,

So, given the lack of Flash support in Apple products like the iPhone and iPad I've been thinking it might be time to update the Character Builders to some more current code. This has resulted in a lot of work over the past few weeks and a completely recreated and redesigned builder that will work on these devices and has entirely new art (don't worry, I plan to keep the old versions available too while Flash survives, for those who prefer their style, since I've gone in quite a different direction with the new one.)

I'm not quite ready to show you the beta version of the new builder yet, but here are some features you can expect:

You can create humans, dryads, fauns, centaurs and somewhat short-limbed marsh-wiggles (as in the last version.) Not sure if dwarfs will be available. If I can figure out how to shorten just the legs, I might do that, as squashing the whole figure always looked kind of weird anyway.

You can add patterns to the main clothing items and choose the colors of the patterns themselves.

You can add preset patterns with ready-made designs like Lucy's Prince Caspian Farewell dress and Susan's Coronation Gown patterns.

So, what I need from you are ideas. What items would you especially like to see in the new builder? Are there outfits from the films or books you'd especially like to be able to make? Accessories that should be available? Give me your thoughts while i'm still adding things!

Come one, come all, to the TLCinema!

I am excited to announce that we have a movie night planned for this month! Since Easter is coming up, we'd like to celebrate with our feature being the Walden The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe! We will be meeting in the forum at our viewing times, and will have a thread dedicated to our commentary. This should enable those who don't use the chatroom to participate! :D

We have two showings that you can participate in:
March 22nd Tuesday Night, 4pm PST with Elanorelle!
March 26th, Saturday Night, 5pm PST with Ariel_of_Narnia and Tenethia!

Two things to keep in mind:
The showing times are when we want to start the films, so if you would congregate in the threads a few minutes ahead of time, that would be fabulous. The host of the showing will start the thread a little ahead of time so that you can do so:)
Second, the Saturday night viewing will be replacing Writer's Group. It will resume the following week at its usual time.

Get your popcorn popped and your drinks poured and get ready for a fabulous time :) (Don't pop it or pour it too soon though, because it will get disgusting)

I am pleased to announce that yet another of our loyal members has been promoted to the position of Staff.

Since I will be stepping down from the post of News Team Editor to concentrate on my PhD research, Always Narnian, one of our loyal news reporters, has agreed to take on the role of heading up the news team. As more information comes in on the production of the Silver Chair film, I look forward to seeing the news that she and her team bring us, along with other interesting Lewis and Narnian-related articles.
