Just a quick question, has anybody else ever thought about how dumb it was for Thorin, Fili, and Kili to all attack Ravenhill? I mean, there are 3 heirs of Durin left. OK! Let's bring them all up there to where the orcs could all be hiding and wipe them out! One would think that Thorin would be sensible enough to leave one of his nephews behind....

Since they were his sister-sons, I don't think they could have stayed behind because of their loyalty to their uncle and the want to defend him, (as in the book where they died "body and shield" protecting him from his attackers). Also, I think that was the reason for Gandalf's remark about "He's taking his best warriors" to give the impression that these four were the ones who would be able to take out Azog. Another possible explanation could be the fact that nothing serious happened to any of them during the journey, save Kili's wound but that was healed, which would give him the thought of invulnerability. Still, I do have to say that it was a terrible mistake to have the brother's scout out the tower.

Yes, I did think of the lack of planning (particularly where the heirs are involved), but I was more concerned by the fact that they didn't die in the thick of the battle like they were supposed to.... (Granted, the solitary fighting allowed for the Bilbo-and-Thorin moment that I love so much....)
