I feel it's time we had a new chat thread (hope the mods for the section don't mind).
So what are your plans for December/Christmas this year? I'm just happy to be home for Christmas for the first time in three years While I enjoyed the experience of a proper winter Christmas, I'm glad to be home this year and to have Christmas the way I know it. Also, I've missed out on our house decorating, so I'm excited to be a part of that again. And I get to do my annual Cabbage Patch nativity scene.
In other news, I've finally submitted my application form to do a PhD next year (starting February - which is when our academic year begins). I've decided, contrary to what I suspected all along, to do it formally through Classics and not Linguistics. I'm going to be looking at the practice of Atticism in Ancient Greek and it made more sense to be doing it with people who understand the Greek texts of the period, and the culture, even if I am going to be using as much of my linguistic knowledge as possible.

Re: Christmas, Christmas time is here - December Chat
My sister and her family are going to visit us for Christmas! I can't wait to see my nephew again! ^.^ *is a very excited little giraffe!* It does mean I need to figure out what to make for Nephew for Christmas, but... that's ok. I still have time.
They might not need me but; they might.

Those sound like great plans, Ajjie and Islie. Ajjie, I'm also very excited to hear the area of your thesis topic. I think you'll be able to make a unique contribution by using your linguistics knowledge.
I'll be with the family. I'm already behind on preparations, of course.

My Day of the Doctor (Doctor Who 50th Anniversary) DVD finally arrived yesterday so I got to watch it. I've spent the last few weeks staying off Facebook, youtube and anywhere else that I might come across spoilers. Needless to say I'm extremely happy. It was more difficult than I thought - especially when I nearly missed the news that my best friend from highschool had gotten engaged (I've been waiting for this for years). Luckily I found out through another source, though it was a week late.
South African television this week has been almost completely taken over by Mandela tributes. Sometimes it gets a bit frustrating, especially when they just replay stuff, but sometimes it's really interesting too. There is a lot about his life, especially his early life, that I didn't know about. I watched the memorial service on Tuesday where Obama gave a very good tribute (along with a number of other presidents, a family friend and some of his grand children). We're also hoping that all this focus on him will wake our current leaders up to their faults and that they might aspire to be more like him.

Merry Christmas. Hope you are all having a lovely day. Christmas is just about over for us (I'm about to head to bed). It was lovely celebrating Christmas at home and getting to eat home-made mince pies and Danish cookies (among many other things).
Here's a piece from our beloved Lewis himself in honour of Christmas (for those who have never read it, it's worth the read. For those that have, it never gets old).
