Hello all! Apologies for coming so late. Had difficulty with logging in. I'm here now and I will send the first three chapter drawings today and then I'll send the next three tomorrow. 😀 Loving everyone's work!
Day 1- I (of course) had to draw Jill. I did go with the BBC version since that's familiar to me XD
Day 2- I have the 4 signs... that one took a long time which was a bit odd to me. I basically drew a smaller version of King Caspian from the PC summer reading challenge on the top left. I know the top right isn't very impressive but I've never drawn giants before, so that's what I got lol. bottom left, "Under Me" is the sign they see later (I know, spoiler alert haha), and of course Prince Rillian. Can't wait to draw a more detailed version of him soon! 😀
Day 3- I have an aged Trumpkin (though, I'm wondering if he's aged enough... oh well. We all know what he looks like in the movie anyways, so at least he's recognizable :P) and Glimfeather... I think this is the first time I've drawn an owl! I'd say he looks kinda cute XD
Chapter 5
Looming doom will make you cheery
Though your views are rather dreary
Puddleglum, Puddleglum.
Too hopeful for a Wiggle's part,
Dour as smog but stout of heart–
Glum as puddles, Puddleglum.
You expect us to forget your name,
If we do it's to our shame
Puddleglum, Puddleglum.
Bravest Wiggle that I know,
Brought a quest you'll up and go
Bright as puddles lit with sun
Puddleglum.
@renegadeoftheshire Oh, welcome aboard Renegade! Great to see some new art coming into the thread, and cheers for being willing to jump in late!
Chapter 6
What counts as gentleness in Giants –
or civility in ogres?
Will they treat you as an equal, say,
Or keep you as a pet?
Are they numbskulls like the sort down south,
Or something nastier yet?
Some of their kindred will laugh and lob rocks,
Some build bridges carved over with eldritch things,
But what counts as gentleness in Giants?
What foolishness the message brings.
Hi Lily! Better arriving late than never, right? 😛 But I'm glad to finally be here.
Apologies for not being able to post last night. I had a busy night last night, but here are my drawings for Chapters 4-6
Top left: I drew the lady in green by the tree (... that sounded like a part of an Irish song for some reason XD aaaaanyways lol) waiting for Rillian to come to her. This will probably be one of the times where I don't follow the BBC version for a few reasons. Her dress was not as green as poison (though I do love the green BBC gave her... just saying :P), her hairstyle was definetley 80s curls (I also don't do well with crazy curly hair because it ends up looking too soft lol), and last but not least (my favourite part because it's just so silly to me :P) the snake crown! I cannot with the crown XD. It gives, "Hello Mr. Rillian, I'm the snake that killed your mother." Haha! Anyways, I tried to make her look somewhat charming but also a little evil. And yes, that is a little snake peeking on the tree... at least it's less obvious than a snake crown 😛
Top right: Puddleglum! He was actually a lot of fun to draw. For his hair, I drew a lot of messy lines (and I mean *MESSY*) and it looked good for his character 😀
Bottom: The lady in green (... I gotta stop using that lol) and the black knight. I used BBC for most of the inspiration. I really liked her riding outfit! I would actually want that costume in my wardrobe haha. I tamed her hair a lot and I changed the clasp on her outfit (full photo of that is here too). The clasp was a nice one in the BBC version but it was obvious like her crown XD Call me crazy but I think she like snakes... I know, so mind blowing lol. Speaking of obvious designs, the black knight's helmet was worse! It had a spiral-y snake design on top. So, I put a green... top part (I don't know what it's called :P) on it. I know he's a very dark knight (no, not Batman) but I thought he should match his lady a little bit... Also green. I like green haha.
I've been too busy to read more and do up more art, but I wanted to see what the rest of you were up to.
Welcome to the party, Rennie! I particularly like your Trumpkin and Puddleglum; you've captured both quite well.
Lily, I quite like your Puddleglum poem. I recall you saying in the chat that it's "too cheery" for the subject, but Puddleglum himself is rather cheerful about his dourness, so it fits very well indeed.
Ajjie, will we get to see your finished crochet projects once you've got them done?
Rennie, glad you could join us. Sorry about the log-in problems. We were trying to keep the trolls out and blocked our own members in the process.
I love all your pictures!! Puddleglum is my favourite so far.
@Ariel: Yes, I will definitely share. Finished the lion's body this evening.
I'm almost recovered from my cold. I tried finding a knitted knight for Ch 6 on Saturday. Couldn't find a free one but this from Amanda Berry is pretty cute (I love her patterns).
https://ravel.me/sir-prance-a-lot
Not sure he quite works for the Black Knight of this chapter.
I also found the pic attached below, which would work much better and could be done in black, but the pattern is discontinued.
I have an idea of a way to adapt a simple generic pattern I do have for peg-doll style dolls, so after my lion I'm gonna use the second pic as inspiration to make my own Black Knight.
Once a daughter of Eve. Now a daughter of the Second Adam.
Chapter 7 (into the hands of giants)
Now you're fumbling,
Suddenly tumbling
Down into the queerest hole.
Wind and weather
Drive you whether
You lose your grip or take control.
All events conspire to help you march right off the beaten path.
You needn't bother with signs if you wish to trade your birthright for a bath.
Come to the fire, little shrimps, he'll say.
Just let your worries melt away.
Oof! That's a hard lesson, Lily, but so true. Here are my next two knitted patterns:
Chapter 7: Snowflakes
https://ravel.me/holiday-frost-snowflakes
(Quite excited to try these. I knew there would be plenty of crocheted snowflakes of this type, but I don't crochet so excited to find knitted examples.)
Chapter 8: Giant Nurse. (Imagine she has grey hair).
This was actually a hard chapter to find something for. I'm supposed to be finding small patterns that wouldn't take too long to make and she's a bit big. But she looks the part and since she's a "giant" I guess the large size is allowable.
Once a daughter of Eve. Now a daughter of the Second Adam.
Chapter 8
Well and truly locked away
From the part you're meant to play,
Now it's time to grin a mask
And don a grand charade.
Somehow you must find a way
To caper childlike and be gay
While you know you fear to ask
A favor of the giant parade.
Great job, again, Lily!
I have so many questions about Harfang and the frequency with which LoGK sends humans to them. I guess they also hunted people themselves, especially between the Golden Age and Caspian's time when things weren't under control. It's a good job they aren't experienced with children Jill and Eustace's age.
Been struggling a bit with ideas for the last 2 chapters, but think I've settled on decend ideas:
Chapter 9: Two options for Jill's red mantle:
https://ravel.me/old-fashioned-knitted-cape (I could see myself making this for myself one day)
Chapter 10: Sleeping dragon
https://ravel.me/knitted-dragon-2 (not a free pattern, but I like it much more than the free dragons I found)
Also, I have made progress on my lion:
Once a daughter of Eve. Now a daughter of the Second Adam.
It's good to see your progress, Ajjie! That the same yarn you used on giraffes?
...
I felt like there were thematic Layers and echoes in this chapter, and tried to capture them the best I could here.
Chapter 9
Hand over hand you grope in the dark:
The dark of the mind,
The mind or the mines.
The danger has long since killed the lark:
The song of adventure
You'd hoped to find.
Lass, you make a lark of it yet
Playing for such high stakes as you get
From giants who think it's all fun and play
To throw a Talking life away.
Boy, you know the truth but partly
When you hear that macabre party
Tell the horrid tale they told
Of their deeds out in the cold.
Brightly playful are your garments,
Traitorous to the runaway.
Every windowpane and parapet
Threatens to give the game away
Until your hands link in the dark,
Far from the song of any lark…
But safer than you've yet been so far,
And on the track of your guiding star.
Chapter 10 (Underland)
Deeper now, and ever deeper,
Creeps the silentest of armies.
Grim Marchwarden marches you
To his grand and dreadful keeper.
Paws keep padding through and through
Lands of dim light, loveless loss;
Slow apocalyptic wonders
Few other mortals come across;
Until your heart will ache and ponder
Whether it really knew the sun.
Still, hold to your hard-won pace.
The hunt is on, you've found the trace.
Ugh. Editing expired before I finished typing my edit!
But.
One bit of speculation that caught my breath this time. The Knight's comment about his Lady being of divine race. What if it was closer to truth than I assumed? All those dreadful carvings of old gods on the ruined giant bridge -- what says they didn't have a lady snake-demon in their pantheon??
Good golly that was a raw chapter, thinking much on it almost makes me wince. This sequence -- the foreshadowing of all the ways she's hiding his identity followed by that desperation, and the closeness of win or lose as the children debate the sign -- feels to me to be possibly the closest Lewis writes to horror outside of certain passages in the Space Trilogy.
I wanted to capture as best I could the feeling of need coming of Rilian here.
Chapter 11
Every night he is sane:
And this is the horror of it.
It should have been a mercy,
A protection on his mind.
But herein comes the pain,
Sweat-dampened and teeth grit,
The stratagem of a lady who's so far from good and kind.
Helpless screaming,
Laughs and crooning,
Every godforsaken night.
Every night he is clinging
To memories with his last wit.
So long it's been since he has
Felt the Sun unmasked.
A slender hope it's bringing,
In the hours he can't forget:
Somewhere green trees grow still if he can break the ties that bind.
Plead your case now,
Prince of starlight,
Until you help them see aright.
One Name shall be your password
To a world that's good and bright.
