We had two chat threads because everyone was using the old one instead of the new one so I just merged them.

In January I'll likely make a new thread and archive it. Thanks to members meeting outside of this thread I guess it doesn't move quite as fast as it did in the old days with monthly threads that would get up to 50 pages long.

Hey, there was a Narnia question I wanted to bring up and see if anyone had any logical thoughts on it. (It's too silly to get its own thread, though. 😉 )

So, in The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, the Dufflepuds' weapons disappeared in their hands. However, the dishes didn't. Does anyone have a logical reason for this, or is it just a plot hole? 😀 😛

I've got two answers for you, a serious one and a silly one:

Serious: A slight oversight on the part of Lewis, owing to the complications that would result from temporary invisibility.

Silly: Naturally, it would be disconcerting if the Dufflepuds' clothing was visible while the invisible Duffles were wearing them (not to mention that it would spoil a significant amount of the story...), and it would be terribly inconvenient if their clothes were invisible while they weren't wearing them, so it would make sense for the "Default" state of visibility for items the Duffles wore to be invisible while worn and visible while not worn--but at which exact point they should stop being invisible is beyond me! so perhaps it started out with everything the Duffles were wearing or holding (and not merely touching) being invisible while they were holding/wearing them, and regaining visibility afterwards. But that would cause all sorts of issues... for instance, can you imagine trying to fix dinner like that? So, as they happened to have a resident magician, he did something Very Fancy and Magical to make things like dishes behave themselves, but forgot to fix weapons and so forth. So, it was a slight oversight on the part of said Magician.

That's the best I think I'm gonna be able to come up with. 😛 Aren't you glad you're not invisible and don't have to worry about all these things? 😆

I'd say that it comes from the school of thought that a weapon is part of a person in some way.

It could also be a strictly practical matter... holding a spear or a bow and arrow or something when it's invisible might be manageable (although I, for one, would refuse to hold an invisible unsheathed sword! particularly if all my friends and I got everywhere by jumping... so I don't know that just any weapon would fit my practicality rule). Whereas preparing and serving food would be much easier if you could see what you were doing... otherwise, you almost might as well be cooking blind. Though I mightn't mind having my spoon going invisible in my hand while I was stirring...

*giggles* I think if you're wearing something it's invisible but if you're holding it it's visible:) so basically what Isle said.

My thought is that weapons are held securely in the Dufflepuds' hands (ie: fists around hilts), but perhaps they weren't holding dishes the same way (ie: maybe at the bottom of the plate or only at the edges), thus allowing the dishes to be visible but the weapons not.

Maybe because food is meant to be shared and clothing and weapons aren't? The "sharing" rule was instituted early on after young duffers started every meal by grabbing the baskets of dinner rolls and thereby hiding them from everybody else by turning them invisible.

Well well well. I have not been on in FOREVER! What be the chat of late? Oh, and please "Mention" me, or whatever it is called, if you want me to respond. As long as it makes it in my notifications, at least. 🙂

At the bottom of every thread page, there are two buttons: "Post Reply" and a wrench. If you click on the little arrow next to the wrench, it'll open up a mini-menu, and from there, you just have to click on "subscribe topic". Then TLC will e-mail you when a thread has an update. 🙂

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

It's my TLCversery too. I don't ever remember the actual date I joined, just that it was on Thanksgiving that my account was actually activated. 🙂
