@always: I didn't know he complained about the dust jacket! I knew he was quite put-out (to put it lightly) that the publisher wanted to split LotR into a trilogy and then was even more upset when RotK was made the title of the third (he wasn't into giving spoilers, obviously).

@shi: lol!

Ooh, I just remembered. A friend was watching bits of the commentary on the DoS EE and told me that there's a "reason" for glowing Tauriel. PJ said something along the lines of how Kili, being so very near death, began to see her as she really was - that is, the Elves' association with light. *headdesk*

Edit: Speaking of PJ, he received his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame today.

@Ariel: I've heard that about Tauriel but *cringes at memory of that scene* it doesn't justify it for me.
Oh! Good for him, he must be happy about it. 🙂

Anyway, I know this thread has veered off toward the negative aspects of this upcoming film so I decided to make a list of 5 things I'm looking forward to:

1. Martin-Bilbo: If for nothing else The Hobbit trilogy has provided us with Martin Freeman in the title role and he has done brilliantly. He is Bilbo without a doubt and I'm looking forward to all his scenes, especially his reconciliation with Thorin.
2. Arkenstone politics: Things have been changed a bit. There is something more Bilbo is trying to accomplish with the stone, preventing Thorin's descent into madness, which I happen to like.
3. Auction sequence: Yes, it's in! I'm sure I'll love it.
4. Smaug: I, personally, love how Smaug has turned out (even if I wanted him to have four legs. Still do) and I cannot wait to see him again!
5. Certain non-Tauriel/Legolas elves fighting: Haven't seen anything like that yet so I can't wait.

Yeah.

I agree with all your points, especially Martin-Baggins. I've been nothing but pleased by his performance, down to little vocal cues, hand movements, facial expressions....

Elanor, I'm with you. I wanted Smaug to have four legs too! 😆

I cannot express how much I love Martin as Bilbo. He is absolutely perfect!

@Ariel- It was a certain country's dust jacket edition- I will have to take a look at my Annotated Hobbit to remember which one! 😉 It IS rather awful!

Hahaha, I like Martin Freeman as Bilbo as well. Very good performance!!!

I can't believe the wait is nearly over and I'll finally see the last film of this trilogy tomorrow. I wasn't even thinking about it till we played Unexpected Journey this evening in preparation for it. Time goes by so fast...

Before going in I have to keep reminding myself that it won't be exactly like the book, it won't even be close to the book (besides some key points), and there will be scenes I won't like. Still, even with my rather pessimistic outlook I'm planning to enjoy this film; it can only be better than what I'm imagining it to be.

So here's to a good experience for anyone who plans on seeing The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies. 🙂

So I saw it this evening. *Breathes in deeply* Wow. I can't think of exactly what to say after finally watching the last instalment of this series. Let's see... to start this off I'll say: I cried. Yes, I cried. Only one other movie has made me shed a tear so that is saying something. It hit me. Hard.

There is soooooo much to love about it: Smaug's attack, Thorin's dragon-sickness (played well by Richard Armitage), a tender scene between Bilbo and Thorin, the Arkenstone played out almost exactly as in the book (including an enraged Thorin about to throw Bilbo off the ramparts), the battle in some parts (which wasn't actually as fatiguing as I imagined it would be), Thorin's death scene with Bilbo (after he is gone and Bilbo's reation: that is where I cried... ah so hard on the emotions and done so well by the two actors...), and Bilbo returning to the Shire to find his belongings being auctioned off. There is probably so much more but these are the main parts that I loved.

So... yeah. I'll come back with more to talk about but I'll have to first collect my thoughts.

Well, I liked when Bilbo brought the Arkenstone to Bard and Thranduil and he (Thranduil) asked if that was the hobbit who had stolen the keys to his dungeon out from under the guard's nose and Bilbo more squeaked than said yes.

And I liked anything to do with Elves and fighting (except when Galadriel used her ring; that was kinda demonic).

And I liked when Kili yelled at Thorin after he had come to his senses, and where the women go fight with the men, and how can I forget Bard killing Smaug! And showing up Alfrid so many times.

And the battle itself, and Bilbo's acorn, and Balin and Bilbo talking about the Arkenstone, and when Thorin did come to his senses.

And when Bilbo was leaving to go home, and, OK, I'll admit it, I liked when Tauriel was mourning Kili.

And when Thorin was dying, and the auction, and Dwalin telling Thorin off, and when Bilbo goes to warn Throin, Dwalin, Fili, and Kili about the other orcs.

And when Thorin almost throws Bilbo off, and when Legolas goes to look for Aragorn, and... have I made my point yet? *insert razz*

The only parts I didn't like were when Galadriel used her ring and where Dain calls the elves that work I'm not allowed to say.
