Not necessarily. I'm sure there are a number of fans who like fem!Bilbo, even for non-romantic purposes. I've probably seen some fem!Bilbo fanart that I appreciated. I think I'm more interested in genderbending in art than in writing... I dunno. Probably because I think that, because of the gender switch, something about the character will be / is lost? *shrugs*
I've never come across any female Bilbo fan-fiction, but then I actually don't read fanfiction very often (contrary to public opinion). I did, however, come across an article about a year ago about a mother who swapped the pronouns while reading The Hobbit to her children.
I forget the original motivation, it might have been something like one of her children randomly decided that Bilbo should be a girl :P. So she started reading it swapping all Bilbo's pronouns to female (and possibly changing some of the other characters' too; I don't remember). In principle, the idea doesn't appeal to me, but she said that it created some interesting new dynamics in the story (so it kinda resulted in a retelling - a kinda AU I guess). By the end of the article, I wasn't entirely against the idea as an experiment, although generally I like the gender of the characters as Tolkien created them just fine, and I do think gender identity and differentiation are important.
Once a daughter of Eve. Now a daughter of the Second Adam.

Saw it! 🙂 While I love Peter Hollens and think he did a good performance of this, I'm partial to Billy Boyd's version. 🙂
I'm partial to it too. 🙂
I agree. Peter's cover is, of course, beautiful, but I do prefer Billy Boyd's a bit more. 🙂
I'm the same way, Ariel. I just feel Billy Boyd's version has a little bit more dynamics and a certain nostalgia to it!
This doesn't have to do with the current Hobbit but it has to do with an older adaptation, the earliest actually, and I wanted to share it because it's so laughable as it strays soooo far from the source material which makes it much like a spoof, (it even comes with the exaggerated definition of a Mary-Sue (the kind that wear pink sparkly dresses and fall in love with one of the main characters)):

O_O I... can't... force myself to watch this any longer. And I'm stopping at a minute and twelve seconds.
It's terrible, right? 😆 Well, at the end Bilbo and the princess rule Dale together then move back to Bag End... (oh yeah, and they kill "Slag" with the Arkenstone...).
O_O *dies*
Can anyone remember where in the movie Bilbo said, "Yes, but bigger, much bigger."? I've been wracking my brain and can't figure it out. 😕
Do you remember which movie or a location or anything else of the context? (Even a shot of someone looking a certain way or something?)
It's at about 1:50 in this video... It's been driving me batty, not knowing where it is!

It's at the beginning of DoS when Bilbo tells the dwarves that there is more than orcs chasing them. Here in this clip at 1:30:
