I hope Smaug flies out of the mountain too before it ends!

I watched the trailer again yesterday (haven't watched it in months) and I see Bilbo at must least visit Smaug once. And I guess from the name, I should have supposed it would get that far (although you can technically have them traversing the "Desolation of Smaug" without actually encountering him).

I guess the big question is what they're going to do with the Battle of Dol Guldur. My assumption that it would end before they entered the mountain was based on the fact that there's a good deal of stuff that needs to happen before then (Beorn, Mirkwood, Spiders, Elves, Barrels, Laketown), and I can't imagine the entire last film /just/ being the Battle of Five Armies. If Dol Guldur happens in DoS, then that seems to make the two movies even more unevenly distributed. On the other hand, I don't really want both major battles in the same film - especially if it also includes the death of Smaug. Hmm...I don't know.

Very true. It seems like so much action is going to happen in the second movie that what will be left for the last movie but The Battle of Five Armies and Bilbo going home?

I really don't think that they are going to kill Smaug in DoS. One of my reasons for thinking that is because the title is also the title of a chapter in the book where Bilbo steals the goblet and then Smaug ransacks the mountainside afterwards. I really think that they will have to wait to kill Smaug until TABA because who is going to watch a two-three hour movie about the Battle of the Five Armies and Bilbo traveling home?

We're assuming, of course, that they are treating these as two separate movies and not one split in half. Are they still planning on a shorter (6 month) release date between 2 and 3?

Last I heard was that it would be a full year between the releases.

Agh, the suspense! Although, I've managed to survive so far. It definitely helps knowing the story and how it will end, and also the trailer for DoS helped.

Yeah because I think they are all going to be December releases, correct?

Yes all December releases spread a year apart. At first it was said TABA was to be released in July but the date changed to them all being released in December 🙂

But-but I thought... grr. So I have to wait longer than I anticipated for TABA?

Sadly yes.
But I think winter is more appropriate for the Hobbit films. (Isn't it winter during the Battle of the Five Armies?)

Oh bother that! I was looking forward to not having to wait a whole year like those who watched the LotR trilogy in theaters. 🙂

😆
I was actually hoping to see it in the summer too, but I guess we better put a bold face on it.
