It doesn't have to be in first person to make a reader feel deeply about a character. I prefer to read (and write) in third person, though I have enjoyed (and written) some stories in first person. It depends on how you want to communicate your character to your reader. First person is better for getting your reader inside the character's head (and allows you to use a more convoluted, more realistic thought process without sounding too crazy). Not to say you can't with third person, but that part is easier with first person.

@ Ariel: Good point. I meant that people tend to have the main character be their favorite character if it's written in first person.

@hobbit: Depends on how one writes it. I think people generally prefer Sherlock Holmes over John Watson and those stories (with the exception of one) is written from Watson's first-person pov. 🙂
(Also, I goosed you two pages ago. 🙂 )

Speaking of forgotten gooses...
I, like, totes forgot I was supposed to be all, like, Mary-Sue! That's like... like admitting that I'm not, like, totes fab in every way except for my random clumsiness!

Lucy is suddenly reminded about a once-upon-a-time conversation with Ariel about Sues and their lack of faults except clumsiness. 😛

Did we really, like, talk about that Jaygee? 'cuz I, like, don't remember that at all! Not that it, like, surprises me, of course. Because nothing, like nothing, surprises a Mary-Sue, like, really! Except maybe, like, if her crush asks her to marry him. As if, like, she totes didn't see it coming *dramatic eye roll*.

@hobbit: haha, I've no idea. 🙂

Lucy watching a documentary on wolverines. And understanding how the superhero relates to them (somewhat, anyway). And thinking that wolverine kits are pretty cute. 😀
