I've always wondered why they didn't just get an elf to kill him.
Fair point, Ajjie. 😉 Wonder why? I mean, Legolas could probably do it, and if not him then GLORFINDEL (who totally should have been in the movie)!
Strider.
@Ajjie: My thought about the use of the word "Men" in Middle-earth is that, when it's capitalized, it means "Humans". Rather like our "mankind". Whereas when it was said that no man could kill the Witch-king, it really did refer to a human male. I may be wrong. I haven't studied Middle-earth or anything and it has been a while since I've read anything Tolkien....
Strider
@Ajjie: Good point. I hadn't really thought of that. 🙂
@Ariel: Also a good point. Now I'm going to have to keep a close eye on when it capitalizes "men" in LotR and see how that works out.

Strider just finished watching the way-bloated extended edition of DoS. And has come to the conclusion that they had to have filmed certain things with the intention of making an extended edition. Like that whole thing with Thrain, man. Either they shot it twice (with and without him), or they digitally removed him for the theatrical release (for the shots in which he and Gandalf share the screen running from Azog and Sauron), or they digitally added him for the extended. The river and fighting Smaug were just as ridiculous and cartoony as the first time. Even if gold-covered Smaug looks fabulous.
@Ariel: Strider agrees. Although, they somehow didn't have Thrain with him even in the shot where Gandalf leans over the edge to see all the wargs down below, when Thrain was RIGHT THERE. 😕 I don't know. :p The extended editions are always fun. 😛 Having said that, I take that back considering the scene in The Return Of The King when Aragon talks with the "mouth of Sauron"... just wow. Was so not prepared for that kind of thing. For anyone who hasn't seen it, I don't think you missed much. 🙂
DoS is the only one I own the EE of...when we bought LotR and AUJ, I didn't know the EEs existed. Then BoFA EE was rated R, sooooooo...
Strider.
Wait, wait, WHAT! I haven't even seen the rest of "The Hobbit", extended or theatrical, so WHAT about Thrain?? I'm so confused......
Strider!
Thrain shows up in the DoS EE...Gandalf meets him in Dol Guldor (?).
Strider.
But...but I thought...Thrain? Didn't he die? I thought he died in Moria. The orcs killed him. I've read the Appendices of LotR! And a lot of the other stuff out of the appendices counted as canon and some of it even made it into the movies (Aragorn and Arwen, anybody?).
Strider is most confused now.
