@Ariel: Ja! 😛 It's strange but I think I'm getting used to it. It's pretty easy so far and I'm not having much trouble understanding what my prof says though she only talks in German. And thanks! I'm doing well so far but it is only the first two days. My legs aren't doing as good, though. 😛 Walking almost the entire span of the school - twice - is a bit tiresome, but I'll get used to it.
We do too! It's the first house we're actually going to offer on, so we're praying and hoping for the best!

Wow. I know I'd be lost quickly enough, haha.
Ooh, yeah, forgot to warn you about that bit.

Oh, really? For some reason I thought you might have for the first house you mentioned shortly after you moved, but okay, faulty memory.

It doesn't sound too far off from English, like say French, so I guess that helps.
I'm slowly acclimating already, but it'll be a while before my feet aren't sore when I get home.

Well, we were very interested in /that/ house but wanted to see what other options there were before putting in an offer. This one meets and even exceeds the requirements we had, so we're going with this one. ^.^ It's only a stone's throw away from a quaint little park and the library is literally right down the street.

Huh. On that note, I assumed that you said "[city and state]" back when you were demonstrating some German?
🙂

Okay, gotcha. Well this house does sound very promising indeed! You'll have a few options for homework locations, haha. I doubt I have to say it, but keep us posted on how that goes!

I did a teeny bit of German in Oxford (also a lot of the early stuff written on my PhD topic is in German which is so frustrating, especially being written in the late 1800s and early 1900s). It was a rather odd experience for me learning German 'cause I know a good bit of Afrikaans (the South African language descended from Dutch). I would have thought that would really help with German - and it did to some extent - but at the beginning it was a bit of a hindrance 'cause I wanted to pronounce everything the Afrikaans way. They are just close enough but with certain sound differences to be annoying. I would find that I couldn't understand a new German word, and then I'd look it up and think '"Oh! It's the same as that Afrikaans word", but I hadn't seen the connection because of the spelling difference.

You're right that it's closer to English then French, because Old English was a Germanic language, so historically they were also closely related. The reason English seems further removed from German than say Dutch or Afrikaans or even the Scandinavian languages is that it acquired a lot of French vocabulary after thr Norman invasion and has picked up a lot of things from other languages over the centuries.

Ask/tell names: Wie heiße du? Ich heiße Elanor. Ask/Tell where I'm from: Wie kommst du? Ich kommst aus [Stadt und Zustand]. I have to get used to capitalizing nouns.

Not quite.

Wie heißt du? Ich heiße ...

Woher kommst du? Ich komme aus

Du = thou in Shakespear > verb ends in -st in either language.
Ich = I, as you know, > verb ends in -st in Neither language, but in German in -e.

You capitalize nouns in German? Did I know this? 😯

If you didn't, you do now.

I would find that I couldn't understand a new German word, and then I'd look it up and think '"Oh! It's the same as that Afrikaans word", but I hadn't seen the connection because of the spelling difference.

Aren't you ever getting around to seeing how such and such a word MUST be that word in Afrikaans, because the spelling (and usually pronunciation) difference (too) is so systematic?

Tyd = Zeit (and actually earlier = Eng Tide, but now that is short for Tide Water).

T = Z, TZ, SS (Zeit, Katze, Wasser)
Y, IJ, EI, EE = EI (frei, Obrigkeit, heil)
D = T / D (compare Eng, = D / TH)

Note that "heel" is more like "ganz" than like "heil" when used as an adverb, while "heil" means safe, not sick, not wounded.

Hey y'all!

Work has been lovely:) Tonight one of the girls dropped a huge thing of tea on herself. We had to mop and squeegee and scrub and stuff 😛 it took a while.

.......... ❓ *thinkthinkthink*...
*checks the Birthday Board*
OH! It's Shield Maiden's birthday!
Happy Birthday, Shield! (I'll say it tonight in case I'm not on tomorrow. 😛 )
And it's International Eat-An-Apple Day and Talk-Like-A-Pirate Day, but I doubt that those were the other two reasons. 😕
................
*checks the TLC calendar*
It says Writer's Group and chatroom prayer. Would that count as one reason or two?
