In a surprising twist, it appears that we may get a Muppet adaptation of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe before we get any Netflix series or films, due to an all-but-forgotten rights deal from 1982.

This deal will allow the Walt Disney Company, now owners of the Muppets, to move ahead with The Muppets Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. Details are scarce, but the basic plot seems to involve the Muppet gang going to visit Gonzo’s uncle, an old Professor who lives in a large house with a mysterious wardrobe. When Gonzo goes exploring the many rooms of the house, he (quite foolishly) shuts himself into the wardrobe and finds himself in a snowy wonderland. Returning to our world (and banging loudly until someone comes to open the door and let him out), he fails to convince his friends that he’s really found a magical land, as no one believes him but Camilla, his faithful chicken.

Eventually the whole gang ends up in the world beyond the wardrobe door, discovering that they are part of an adventure that will release the land of Narnia from the spell of an evil queen.

A leak from Miss Piggy has stated that she will be playing the important role of Queen Jadis. “It’s something I’ve always wanted to do,” she said. “I loved the stories growing up, except the bits about Turkish Delight. Why would anyone ask for Turkish Delight when they could have caviar? Certainly not moi. And I was just thrilled to learn that another pig would be playing the role when the first film came out in 2005. Imagine my disappointment when I learned the actress was Tilda Swinton, and not my cousin Tilda Swineton of the West Hampton Swinetons, the famous theatre family!”

Whether Miss Piggy can fill Swinton’s shoes remains to be seen. She certainly exudes the right air of immortality, as she hasn’t aged a day since her acting debut.

While the rest of the Muppets won’t be cast as direct matches to characters in the book, Disney sources say we can expect to see Kermit in a role similar to Peter’s, Robin as the wide-eyed innocent, much like Lucy, and Gonzo, frustrated by his treatment by the other Muppets, succumbing to Turkish Delight, most likely with Rizzo Rat gorging himself alongside.

“It’s a really great opportunity,” said Bob Chapek, CEO of the Walt Disney Company. “We distributed the first two Narnia films in 2005 and 2008 and we’re very pleased to return to Lewis’ sandbox. This is a project that’s got everyone at the company very excited.”
